Office 2007 - 5 minutes of glory .. not

Hi all,

Today, I had the misfortune to be forced to use Office 2007 on my newly built work laptop. Not only is this piece of crap 10 times slower and uglier than 2003, it also uses Windows Search to index files.

And guess what, if you disable Windows Search, no search function in Outlook. Something as trivial as right-click > find in this folder does not exist in the glorious digital diarrhea called Outlook 2007.

I'm sorry for my tone, I'm so ~Snip~ right now. Luckily, I can uninstall this thing and install 2003 back, which I'm doing right now. Can someone possibly explain what they see in the sick blue fonts, sick blue "rounded" look & feel and crippled functionality of this thing? Or the layout of menus and such. Incredible ...

Just give Office 2007 some more time and you'll like it .

I took weeks getting used to the "NEW - IMPROVED" 2007 which came as part of a biz package
Got dizzy searching through the ribbon of fate for all the old useful short cuts.
Always have a momentary flinch when I open it up even now.

Still have peeps turning up at meetings with the 'wrong' format files which of course wont run on the usually older Office versions still in common use. LOL

No need, I downgraded the office version to 2003, things are more normal now. Not normal, just more normal. Soon, OpenOffice + odf-converter, then lyx, then we're ok.

At least I can do this, imagine the poor souls at work who are given only one version, take it or suffer it.

Too bad, Mrkvonic. I actually like Office 2007 quite a lot (except Outlook 2007; I prefer webmail instead). But then again, I really like applications that have pretty interfaces. It was okay for me to relearn where the functions are located just so I can continue to use Office 2007. As for performance, it runs just fine on my computer; as long as it's not excruciatingly slow, I can live with it.

The "Save as PDF" function is now integrated into Office 2007 Service Pack 2.

There is no doubt that 2007 is much much slower and clunkier than 2003. No comparison IMO. I do use 2007 and am used to it I guess. I don't like the new layout of menus and so on much myself. I prefer the older 2003. I use 2003 at work, but for home I only own 2007. I use Outlook daily and don't mind it, in fact I prefer Outlook over any other mail clients. But you are correct, 2003 was much meaner and leaner and generally more friendly if you ask me.

 

I've been forced to use office 2007 a few weeks ago, so far
It does adhere to any of the theme I use in XP.
Some buttons do not get skinned and end up grey. There are various bugs in Outlook (eg when creating a calender entry or task default reminder is repeatedly set days AFTER the event).
Word and Excel have the new ribbon (which is not too bad to use), but Outlook does not, which makes for a less consistent user interface between applications.
In word if you are using reading view, the close button closes reading view, does not close word.
We have to run in 2003 compatibility mode, but it allows me to use 2007 only features then moans when I save the file, why not just stop me being able to use these features in the first place ?

Oh, and these issues are consistent on 2 machines I have at work, we can't even get it installed on our virtual machines so we have had to resort to using Open Office.
I just wish I could revert to Office 2003.

 

I don't really have a problem with 2007 myself. I can tell you though that perfromance will get better with 2010. It is like going from Norton 2004 to 2010, lol.

You're free to hate anything you want. But pretending that we all share your misguided opinions, on the other hand, is simply being ignorant at best.

 

Did u have sp2 installed also?Outlook beeing slow,freezing was seen at least at my work PC's on many machines,before sp2 was installed.

 

I got it with the new image on the work laptop (includes sp2).
Worked it for 5 minutes, uninstalled, installed 2003 ...

I can't explain what you ask, but I can say that I fully agree with your observations on Office 2007. While what follows might be a bit off-topic, I have to add it - what aggravates me even more than the Office 2007 bloat is the other vendors (example, Nitro PDF - an Acrobat alternative) who incorporate the same "Office 2007 style" in their GUIs, bloating their apps too. Why the hell is that needed? So the users of Office can feel comfortable? Jeez... Don't get me wrong, Nitro PDF is an excellent app otherwise, but why oh why this ugly looking, unintuitive, resource hogging GUI?

The Ribbon (or Fluent User Interface) is actually very nice (for me, at least). I'm pretty sure Microsoft is working on improving its performance, since Office 2010 will use Ribbon as well.

 

I can understand the ribbon, it's touchscreen readiness sort of speak. What i don't understand is why -3^2 = +9. It will take me a while to understand that one, which btw, is the same in OOo so sleepy.

What do you not understand about (-3)^2 = 9? That is mathematically correct.

. . I've been using 2007 for well over a year, maybe 2 by now, and its fine. I've customized it to my preferences, found most of the crazy places configs are kept (a very strange MS attribute), and after cleaning the bloat configs it initially installs the app is pretty quick. It has a few issues but nothing so critical its rendered useless or junk. And I agree Outlook should be visually consistent, and why it isn't makes no sense, except its MS. Overall I find it much improved over 2003

Well, I guess I'm just used to enclosing any negative number in parenthesis to make it clear that the negative sign is part of the number.

 

It's ok, but now you know i don't.
I would use here and there on a long equation, perhaps, but usually not. Exponentiation, multiplier/divider, and then +/-, always, and no doubts. There is the universal Math, and then there are these ... errr.. must save Ronjor from editing.
Lets just say it took me (and you) too much time to learn Math (universal language!) just to observe these "got you sucker, it's all reversed" in the worst times.
In this light, was that remark that offensive Ronjor?
