old version of Defensewall from GAOTD

My latest setup is as follows:

OS: Windows Vista Home Premium SP2

Resident:
- Avira Premium Security Suite
- Prevx (free)
- Sandboxie (paid)

On Demand:
- Returnil
- Shadow Defender (paid)
- Online Armor (paid)

I believe this is quite robust for daily normal surfing use. (no porn, no p2p).


I still have a copy of DefenseWall 2.09 plus the key that I previously got from Give Away of the Day site. As I've already spent on Avira, OA Premium, and Sandboxie, I do not intend to spend again on additional security product.

My question... is it still safe to use DW2.09 as an additional layer of protection despite being an older version of DW?

 

If you check out the DW forums, you will find that there have been some substantial changes since your version. Moreover, IME, the later versions are more light in respect to CPU time usage.

However, IMHO, even this old version will be safe to use.

But with your present layered defense I do not think adding DW is necessary at all. You have a more than adequate security setup already.

 

To be fair the old version of DW will still provide a high degree of security,it's not as if it was a rubbish product that only just became any good.Since you already have some other strong security in place you'll do just fine if you feel you need the added security.However as Blackcat says it's probably not necessary with everything else you have already.

 

pardon me but how are you using online armor on demand with avira premium secuirty and others ?

 

and pardon me too how do you install DW now with the old key from GotD - I thought you had to do the installation on the relevant day the offer is made?

 

With the GOTD offers they usually come with their own time-limited installers,however once you have the licence key you can just use the regular installer any time you wish.

Maybe wrong choice of words,.... I have an OA license, previously had installed it but recently taken OA out as my wife does not know how to respond to the pop up.

That's why I'm considering the older version of DW as an additional layer protection.

 

How were you planning to use it ?

I'm running it at default setting now, seems ok. Sandboxie and Firefox are both untrusted. Will probably try out different setting later.

IMO, fully utilizing what we already have is better than adopting any new one.

Why not to use Sandboxie and Shadow Defender together. This may be a better arrangement.\\ The others, such as firewall, AV, HIPS are merely doing their fundamental duties, nothing new.

 

I did try running both Sandboxie and Shadow Defender together (with SD set to Shadow Mode upon boot), with some exclusions for Avira update and personal folder.

But after 3 days, booting and turning off the notebook became very long and unstable. This does not happen if I boot normally without Shadow mode on. I'm not sure what happened.

Now I'm only either using Returnil or Shadow Defender only when needed.
