Hi there! I am having huge problems connecting two computers together through a router in my home network. One is a Vista Ultimate and the other is the Windows 7 RC. Both are equipped with ESS 4, sharing is enabled on both, they both have network awareness turned on, both have folders shared, on the Win 7 computer there is a printer attached that is properly shared, Windows Firewall is turned off on both of the computers, they are both members of the same workgroup and still......no contact! But....if we both turn off network filtering in ESS 4 we are able to see each other and the printer is also reachable from the other computer. I´ve set up numerous home networks before, XP<>XP, XP<>Vista, Vista<>Vista with no problems at all, but this drives me crazy.

My investigations in this clearly points out ESS 4 as the culprit here, because when network filtering is off the LAN works prefect. What can be done? Have i missed something crucial in the ESS 4 setup? I´m confused........

Enable logging blocked connections in the IDS section of the firewall setup so that you see what rule is blocking the communication. Subsequently you can adjust the rule or create a new one that will allow the communication necessary for file sharing. Also make sure that the other computer is a member of the trusted zone.

So, this is what i did......followed advices in the KB article per MathewG´s post, put the computers (by IP address) in the trusted zone on both computers, checked to se if the local subnet was in the trusted zone on both computers (it was), checked the IDS logs (logging were ON), no show :-( The firewall logs tells me there are blocked NETBIOS connections from the other computer to mine on port 139, and on the other computer i see a huge amount of blocked ICMPv6 rerquests, IPv6 addresses. On my computer i can also see "Address temporarily blocked by active defense (IDS)" from the other computer on the LAN, both UDP and TCP calls.....This is weird indeed.

How could that be possible? As far as i can understand my configuration basically allows everything in the trusted zone (my LAN/Home network), but obviously not. The IDS seems to live its own life, pretty much neglecting the rules i set.....

    hi,

you may have a rule to block all traffic...
    (verify the firewall rules)

    That's your problem right there.

2 Windows 7 systems here and sometimes LAN traffic is allowed (shared folders and printers) and other times it is not.

ESS (the firewall portion) does not operate correctly on Windows 7 yet.

While I will agree that it probably doesn't work on Windows 7, I have had a similar problem but... 1 machine a desktop with Windows 7 RTM, 1 laptop with Vista SP2. ESS installed on the laptop, Windows firewall on the desktop. Could not get them to connect to each other, and figured it was a problem with Windows 7. However I finally figured out that if I disabled the firewall in ESS on the Vista laptop, everything worked. Currently running Windows firewall on both, no more problems.

I´m willing to agree on that, because that is EXACTLY what is happening here. One hour it works 100%, the other hour not at all. Checking the firewall logs on both computers reveals that the IDS on a totally random basis blocks fully legit LAN traffic for no obvious reason at all

So, the conclusion must be that ESS 4 is NOT fully compatible with Windows 7 environments, and that is very sad news to me as i´ve heard from so many sources that ESS 4 was the way to go if you wanted a good protection even on Windows 7.

Well, time to look for another solution until Eset releases a TRULY compatible version........

Windows 7 is yet to be released by Microsoft. It's been already mentioned in other threads that the next build of the firewall module (1052) will contain rules necessary for proper functioning of file sharing in Windows 7.

If you enable test mode in the update setup, you'll receive an updated firewall module soon.

This is indeed good news that the new build 1052 will be introduced ready for the official release of Windows 7.

I have purchased it on one of the pre-order deals that was recently being offered and I was wondering how ESS would handle it.

I guess anyone that is using an RC version will just have to be patient and know that this is being addressed by ESET.

Did so and awaiting patiently to see if it fixes the Windows 7 sharing issues I've been having.

Do we know when it will be released? This week, next?
