I've been monitoring SRI International Malware Threat Center (link) for a few weeks and notice that NOD32v2 is always in last. Despite my misgivings about the new proxy method of web scanning, I just upgraded to v4 last night based on these tests. Are they reputable? Will v4 provide better detection results for their honeynet? I thought v2 and v4 use the same definition files so I'm not sure.

Also most websites that I have seen that review AVs seem to always have Avira detection rates ranked higher than NOD32 or Kaspersky which are the only 3 AVs that I would even consider paying for. I want to stay with NOD32 when my subscription expires in May next year, but I must admit to being tempted to switch to Avira. Any thoughts from anyone that may have switched from Avira to NOD32 would be appreciated.

Any tests based on honeypot samples should not be taken serious. It's well known that honeypots catch a high percentage of corrupt samples. We made a test of these samples in the past and, after excluding non-functional ones, we found out that ESET actually protected their users against about 98-99% of them.

Although I agree with Marcos, I can't say it's not nice to see Microsoft at no1 place.

Also this is what really matters in todays world, speed.

Unlikely elapsed , I can't agree with Marcos - at all.

Micrososoft products are well known to produce almost no false positives and to have acurate engine , too . Generally , nobody should trust such tests BUT when two products known to produce NO FPs and to have ACURATE ENGINES are compared (Microsoft is rated #1 and NOD32 is rated last) , this means A LOT. This means that NOD32 is great but lacks people behind it , it lacks people and their fast reaction . ESET Virus Labs s****.

Additionally , Symantec and Kaspersky (especially Symantec which Lab also keeps on quality and have low FP rate) are rated more than NOD32 .

This is test mostly for speed , not for something else .

I guess you have a point, and from experience, I can agree with you about ESET's virus lab, and the attitude of their employees there :(

Even if these numbers might not be 100% accurate because of FP and stuff like that i also believe this is a clear indication of the responsetime from the AV vendors. 85% for Avira and 9% for Nod32...this it not only nonsense that should be ignored. The fast response of Avira and slow response of Eset fit very well with a lot of opinions from this and other forums as well. I really hope Eset will take notice of such report and not just ignore them since there are some truth in these numbers as well. I know that Avira is known to have a lot of FP, but Symantec with 79% is known to have very few FP and the same goes for Microsoft. Still they score much higher.

The last 3 on this list should really do some internal research with regards to the responsetime.

Thanks for all the responses! I'm going to put some thought into my initial reaction to seeing this website along with several other website tests that show NOD32 sinking towards the bottom of the rankings. When my subscription comes due in May and if Avira stays consistently at the top and NOD32 continues to slide, I'll have an easy decision to make... That is if I wait that long. :) Thanks again everyone!

From the "seat of my pants" view, we are constantly getting more and more malware infected users that had fully up to date and working nod32.

I'd like to think that it's just luck that they got the stuff before there was a signature, but when I uploaded the malware myself to virus total at least half of the other virus scanners had caught it already, and eset had not.

ESET better pick it up, usually you have to let Computer Associates buy your software company before it starts making terrible products.
