Any harm in defragging .TLB files? .CFG?

I feel sure this has been asked before - and almost sure the answer is "Perfectly OK to defrag the backup files". But has anyone had a bad experience with this?

Also, how about the acronis_backup_place.cfg. It is too small to be fragmented, but I had it become unusable. I suspect this is because a defragger that I was testing "optimized" by moving it. Am I right in thinking this file should not be moved to a different sector?

 

A .tib file is just a regular file except that it tends to be very large. As long as your defragger is good and your hardware is rock solid there is no problem defragging them. OTOH, there is also little advantage, if any, to defragging them. When they get used the process takes minutes or tens of minutes to run so saving a few seconds is meaningless. Unlike some Windows files which are frequently accessed in a session, tib files are rarely, if ever, accessed.

No idea about the .cfg file question.

 

What you say is true, seekforever. However some of the defraggers I am trying insist on looking at every file just in case something is fragmented.
And, since I do a diffferential backup every night, the full backup does get looked at once a day.

 

My machines all defrag automatically every week, and the location of the Acronis tib file is included, and I have never had a problem with this. It's not easy to exclude specific files on my defragger, so I just don't bother. I would not worry about it.
