Problem making disk clone with Acronis 2009 Home

Sorry I am new to all of the fine points here.
I have a dual boot laptop with a Windows XP partitions and Linux FC10 partitions and I need to put a clone copy on an external USB drive.

I am using a recently purchased version of Acronis True Image 2009, Home.

I used the Clone utility of the software making a clone of the Laptop disk. All is well with the LINUX side as I can reboot the laptop using the cloned USB drive by direction the bios to boot from the USB device. All is not well with the Windows XP side of things.

I can see Windows access the external USB but then it runs into problems and stops. It is reporting "a problem"
The technical information is

It seems that the information in the clone USB drives MBR is either corrupt or not recognised in the boot process.

I don't think it's possible to run Windows XP from a USB disk.

 

It's not a simple matter to boot Windows from an external device. There have been scattered reports that it has been done, but you have to jump through many hoops to accomplish it. Not worth it.

If you want to have a backup of your system use the Backup feature, not Clone, and keep the backup Image on the external drive. Then in case you want to revert to that state, you have to boot with the Rescue CD (be sure to make one and test it) and use the Recovery/Restore feature.
