MSE updating three times a day has been the norm on my Vista computers. I have only noticed maybe a couple of times it only updated 2x.

The interesting thing is not that MSE has updated three times in 24 hours, but rather that the updates are spaced out at exactly 8 hour intervals. Given that the timestamps on the definition updates are not always 8 hours apart, this seems a little unlikely if MSE is checking hourly, which makes me think that the hourly setting is being ignored and checking is actually occurring every 8 hours. :doubt:

I have never noticed that before  . I am at work and can't check my machines but I did install MSE on an "experimental" Vista machine we have here. Yesterday it updated at 4:43AM, 12:42PM, and 8:43PM. You learn something new everyday :)

I thought I was crazy but you're right. MS has this thing updating like that. I still think this AV is really good. The best part is it's simplicity.

So far, I like it too. I running it now to see how it might run at our small business. Once the beta kinks are out, I may very well migrate over our 20 or so PCs. I don't think it's my cup of tea for home but Avast covers me well there.

I agree. So long as MSE can be set to automatically update, one way or another, with regular definition updates, that's good enough for me. :thumb:

I have tried DefenseWall with MSE on a XP Pro sp3 box.

Set DefenseWall server + application + DW directory in Windows/system32 to be excluded by MSE. Set MSE to scan only downloaded files and attachements.

    Works without problem this way

Anyone have an idea when the next MSE Beta will be coming out?

They want it released before windows 7, so that's October. Since it's pretty stable I'm going to guess next will be max 1 more beta then RC. So this or early next month.

Some more interesting bits, a review here, although in French I do not understand a word, it seems to detect every sample thrown at it, but having trouble with 1 it partially detected.

On the same website are reviews of the 3 cloud anti-viruses: Norton, Panda & Prevx. Microsoft beats them all in comparison. I don't think cloud is "quite there" yet.

Interesting... although I'd have to know which version/edition they compared to when it comes to the other vendors. ;) Anyway, MSE seemed great already from start, and together with a great sandbox it's probably one of the most easiest, lightest and flawless methods you could use. :)

This weeks EWeek had a blurb about Morro that basically said the same thing- Morro was able to detect all of the in the wild samples that it was tested against, the downside in their view is that if is 100% def based.

If you mean it uses a pure blacklist I could *cough* a thousand times in your direction. As stated many many times it uses generic signatures/heuristics to detect files. If it used only a blacklist it would barely use any CPU when downloading a new file. CPU usage = file analysis.

If by "flawless" you mean in terms of software conflict and not detection rate, then I wholeheartedly agree with the entirety of this statement.
All software vendors will go out of their way to make sure that their products are compatible with MSE, and for me this will give MSE the edge!

I will happily trade two or three percentage points on malware test results for an easy, light and conflict-free blacklisting product, complementing this with a great sandbox.

I may never pay for AV software again, haha! :D

Not talking about compatibility at all, I'm talking about the possibility of an "attack" (malware) coming through. "MSE seemed great already from start, and together with a great sandbox"
