Probably more of an anti-annoyance. It works great though.

Well, quite a few ads these days serve as a vehicle for drive by downloads, so, it COULD be a security extension (yes I'm aware there's more to it than just the ad itself, but if the ad is blocked, it can't do anything to you).

I used to use noscript which is a very powerful security addon but, it was a little too much for me. I got tired of configuring the protection for new web sites.

Besides AdBlock Plus, Ghostery, NoScript and Perspectives, I find LongURL Mobile Expander indispensable in knowing where a link is going to take me before clicking it, especially those TinyURL links found in social networking sites.

    Security, Privacy and related:

    - BetterPrivacy
    http://netticat.ath.cx/extensions.html
    "Super-Cookie Safeguard"
    - Controle de Scripts
    http://controledescripts.mozdev.org/
    Improves your JavaScript control.
    - CS Lite
    http://addons.mozilla.org
    Control cookie permissions.
    - CustomizeGoogle
    http://www.customizegoogle.com/
Enhance Google search results and remove ads and spam.
    - Ghostery
    http://www.ghostery.com/
Ghostery identifies and allows you to block the 3rd parties (web bugs) that are hidden on the current page you're visiting. Web bugs include ad networks, behavioral data collectors and web analytics providers.
    - HttpFox
    http://code.google.com/p/httpfox/
An HTTP analyzer addon for Firefox
    - NoScript
    http://noscript.net
Extra protection for your Firefox: NoScript allows JavaScript, Java (and other plugins) only for trusted domains of your choice (e.g. your home-banking web site). This whitelist based pre-emptive blocking approach prevents exploitation of security vulnerabilities (known and even unknown!) with no loss of functionality… Experts will agree: Firefox is really safer with NoScript :)
    - Perspectives
    http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~perspectives/
    Securely bypasses Firefox HTTPS security
errors by verifying certificates using a collection of
    Network Notaries.
    - RefControl
    http://www.stardrifter.org/refcontrol/
Control what gets sent as the HTTP Referer on a per-site basis.
    - RequestPolicy
    http://www.requestpolicy.com/
Control which cross-site requests are allowed. Improve the privacy of your browsing. Secure yourself from Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) and other attacks.
    - User Agent Switcher
    http://chrispederick.com/work/user-agent-switcher/
Adds a menu and a toolbar button to switch the user agent of the browser.
    :D
