Best Defragmenter?

    I'm using Windows XP.

I've read so many reviews my eyes are hurting.

Some of the more popular ones seem to be:

PerfectDisk seems to be the most recommended. I tried it but it was too bloated for me. I didn't like it installing in the services and such.

Is there an alternative program other than windows built-in defragmenter?

Honestly, whatever defragmenter I use,the performance improvement is too small for me to perceive. So I'm just using smart defrag for it's free and GUI is not too ugly. When I'm bored and don't know what to let my pc do,I do defrag. :argh:

I still don't feel anything after defrag though.

Once you try ultimatedefrag you won't want to use the other defrags. I use it on my mediaPC that has 4 hard drives. It does work. Some of the hard drives can get 40 - 50 percent fragmented without regular defrag. I do notice a drop in performance when the drives are heavily fragmented,

Ultimatedefrag Graph is shaped like a circle (most of the other defrag software is square blocks) , it looks like a hard drive platter. The auto defrag mode will move your least use files to the inner tracks. When you click on each block on the graph it tells you what files are located on that cluster.

personally i have now switched all my systems over to puran defrag. i was a LONG time perfect disk user but i find puran faster and i love its scheduling and it does just as good a job as perfectdisk did for me.. actually it feels like the systems even start up faster though i have not timed then yet..also dirt cheap for a lic at 19.95$ if you found perfectdisk to bloated give puran defrag a try i think you will love it!!

Any reason for not using the defrag utility/program that comes with Windows XP ? It's free. And it's certainly not bloated. It's part of the OS.

If you have 'special needs' you might want to use a third party defragger.

    Puran is tiny but effective.

My thought is to use the built-in Windows defragmentation application under better control. MyDefrag http://www.mydefrag.com/index.html This program and it's predecessor (JKDefrag) have been my favorites for over 2 years...

IMHO the windows defragger is slow has molasses and it does not tell you how much it sped up the PC and it does not do a very good job.

Mind you fragmentation has a greater effect as disk space dwindles. You'll notice it more if she's low.

I use Diskeeper 2009 Pro on XP Pro SP3. Fast, thorough and automatic...very happy with it.

I can't claim it is "the best", but I am another long-time Perfectdisk user; and it has given no problems.

I am as cheap as they come, so I have one computer with PD and one with nothing except the Windows Vista defragger. The Win defragger also does an acceptable job.

If speed is what you are looking for, I had excellent results that were actually noticeable in speeding up my system by using Uniblue speedupmypc and registrybooster.

I actually love the "stealthpatrol". I never actually "defrag my PC", it is just always at near 0% fragmentation and I never notice it running at all. :D

Do you have any benchmarks to show how the affects real world performance ?

Are there any drives out there that still have a single platter and how does it know to display zoned blocks (where each cylinder has a different number of sectors) ?
What about the fact I have 4 partitions on one machine or raid on the other.
This representation is no better than the more common grid layout.

My personal experience and I have the benchmarks to prove is that perfectdisk and diskeeper 2008 against the built in XP defrag tool and they all made an unmeasurable performance improvement on 1 months worth of fragmentation on my machine. I say unmeasurable because the performance improvement was less than the difference between multiple benchmark runs.
Note this is for standard day to day programming and office use. Any significant creation and manipulation of large amounts of files (P2P or media editing) could well make a difference, but for the average home user any of the free or built in defrag tools will suffice.

Totally agreed (I forgot to mention this in my previous post) and this is why I regularly run defrag tools
Defrag time also goes up significantly as the drive fills as well (as less free space to shuffle the data about).

I dont think there really is a best defragmentor.
on my computer i use mydefrag which is a very decent defragger.
on my parents machine diskeeper is used and works very well but i couldnt afford it for my pc when i got it and then discovered jkdefrag (now mydefrag) and liked it alot and its free.

Windows 7 built in. Hands down is better than all the 3rd party I've tried. Diskeeper/PerfectDisk/Ultimate Defrag/etc....you get the idea. Win7 defragger FTW!

I would recommend PuranDefrag www.puransoftware.com for $19.95 (definitely not bloatware) or JkDefrag/MyDefrag and UltraDefrag (for the boot time stuff)

I am busy benchmarking all the major defrag programs, so this recommendation may change over time. Check out the 2009 Defrag Shootout for more info

    @ Donn,
you are recommending using both at the same time MyDefrag and UltraDefrag? I mean to have them both installed on 1 machine?

jk defrag. just download it, run it, throw it away- no install needed and does a nice job.

DefragExpress or better yet go with some real MUSCLE in UD by DiskTrix.

A hard drive never had it so good.
