Quick question please.
After the new block list is installed, is thet old one supposed to be deleted or kept?
Not sure on this.

I do know in outpost you remove the old and add the new
so dont know about OA??

 

I decided to do the same in OA.
It doesn't make sense to keep the old when the new one corrects and adds to the old.

I just overlay the "new" list over the "old" list. Works perfect without any muss or fuss. For example, having done so yesterday, when I checked OA, the correct list (and date) was displayed in the blacklists tab.

When I added the new .txt file to OA firewall, the text file reads:
IPblocklists_for_OA_malware_rogue_only.txt. and in the line below repeats the file and adds .bak on the end. It didn't add a second entry with .bak the last time I updated. Should I leave the second entry with the .bak or delete it leaving only the .txt file shown above? Thanks

Surely a good hosts file will do the same?
O.A. will let you see your hosts file and edit it, (as well as preventing changes being made to it unless you give approval), without having to remember where, in Windows, it's located!
I see that this " Blocklist for Online Armor" does not come from Tall Emu themselves.

When I installed the current ipblocklist for OA, the correct number of entries shows 11168 but the "Last updated" date changed to 12/30/1899 after the install. Anyone else experience this?

IP Blocklist for Online Armor and Outpost

Hi Folks,

Thanks for the news on this, and thanks to Donna, Gordon, Mike and others. I downloaded, first time I've worked with any type of blocklist or hosts file (except once a mini-hosts-file for a few Paltalk nuisance ads, which I may go back to since Avira grumbles at Paltalk browser attempts a lot.).

Please note that Donna is making this available for both Online Armor and Outpost. (No blocklist in the free edition of OA, nor Outpost). I see the Outpost is put on another thread, not sure why, seems the updates are likely simultaneous and from the same locale and even the same file, as far as I can tell.

Note that the readme is nice and informative, and recommends you consider a hosts file in addition to the blocklist.

I think one issue to consider is if you develop your personal exceptions to the blocklist you want to know how easy it is to implement those exceptions at the time of a new update. That may not be as easy with this blocklist as it would be with a dedicated hosts file program that knows how to merge and stuff. If somebody is savvy on that, please share away, right now it is not a big issue as I do not anticipate any overrides. Another similar possiblity is a utility to toggle the list off and on, as is done with some hosts file utilties, in order to have a temporary defacto override.

Tallemu should step up to the task of ending the trend of "blind leading the blind" by developing a superior blocklist format, instead of farming the chore to a good-intentioned but misdirected list maintainer. I had hoped tallemu would internally, or via OA user collaboration, develop a superior blocklisting format... rather than adopting the format (and content) being proffered by bluetack. Arguably, both the format of this blocklist, and the effort represented by compilation of the blocklist, are misdirected.

The readme.txt distributed with the COA professes "bad IPs" often host more than one bad domain, and the (blacklist maintainer) is causing "collateral damage" by blacklisting myriad innocuous sites which are hosted on shared IPs.
Yet, to the other extreme, the list represents a "chasing your tail" approach -- micromanaging and bloating the list with XXX.YYY.scumdomain.tld hostname entries, ala HOSTS file entries.

It's not a HOSTS list. If xxx.scumdomain.tld AND scanner.scumdomain.tld AND secure.scumdomain.tld are all known to be problematic... stop playing games and just blacklist the entire scumdomain.tld

readme.txt also states that the entries primarily represent "scareware" domains. C'mon, this narrow-minded blocklist content focus isn't what OA users need.
