Someone surely will say SuperAntispyware... I say A-Squared. And I never had all the FP that some people says.

well since A-Squared is an AV + AS + BB, i say the closest comparison atm wuld be NIS in terms of features and the upcoming Avast v5.

Yes, probably - Avast v5 and Norton 2010 in general, whether you'd prefer NAV or NIS.

Nothing is better than A2 overall. The nexy best traditional AM is Avira.

Prevx is very good and will offer about the same protection against real world threats.

In all my testing, A2 and Prevx are significantly better than any of the main AMs against new malware (I test malware daily)

A2 will tend to detect more malware samples than Prevx, but by virtue of the way Prevx works, it will offer as good, or in some cases, better protection against malware that is really out there in the wild - including new < 72 hour stuff.

Many samples I receive are not in circulation yet and about 10% of new stuff is in fact junk and or, in fact not new, but very old junk that wont work against new patched systems.

    Hi Puss,

This is a learning question for me, and not an argument.
Are you saying that A2 does better than a AV suite? When you say malware do you mean viruses, trojans, worms, etc?
I have had very few attempts to penetrate my systems, but the AV has always caught it and not the AM applications.

I had thought that AV suites such as KIS or Avira would catch a much larger percentage than A2.

    What am I missing?
    Thanks.

    Regards,
    Jerry

Hi Jerry, by malware, I mean all the bad stuff - rogues, adware, spyware, worms, exploits, viruses, trojans, etc etc.

A2 was once an app designed to catch trojans, adware, spyware etc that AVs back then missed. A2 now covers all malware as it has the Ikarus engine AND the A2 engine.

I believe the term AV is a bit old hat now - threats are all over the place and in many forms, so most AVs are now AMs - which should cover all sorts of nasty things out there.

A2 is not to be confused with apps like SAS or MBAM which proport to cover what apps like Avira, KAV etc miss. These have tiny databases and cant be used as your sole protection - all the traditional "AVs" - Norton, KAV etc will cover all threats - and so will A2 - at the moment, it protects against over 2.7 million individual malware threats - by its signatures alone - and has behavoural protection as well. Apps like SAS / MBAM only cover a few thousand nasties, so are not full AMs.

The only thing A2 (and Prevx) lack is on access scanning - that is to say, their real time monitor will only scan a file when it tries to execute, not when it is accessed. On exe scanning is all you need to protect your system from infection (all malwere MUST run in order to work) - but, I would like on access sometimes as it lets you know if you recieve or download malware (even if it is not active)

a-squared free is a powerfull on demand scanner
just don't check its heuristics(in custom scan) to avoid false positives.

A-Squared is in league of its own, hard to replace it and expect the same results;)

does a-squared Anti-Malware 4.5 work without probleme under vista64 or xp64, because on the website it says "On x64-systems the scanner and OnExecution guard work very well, but the behavior blocking module (Malware-IDS) does not run currently", i dont really understand, does it affect the overall reliability?

I might be wrong, but if you right-click a file with Prevx, you get the option to scan it. Is this not on access scanning?

I thought that was always considered an on-demand-type of scan. :D

That post Dr Who wasted five minutes of my life I wish I could get back. ;)

In the real world, staff get fired all the time. It's a free world, and they know this, so they do what they like - until the real world catches up with them.

Use MBAM, use a-squared, use what you're comfortable with.

Tony, Retadpuss is meaning the file is only scanned once executed. Avast, Avira etc, will let you know a 'virus' is on the desktop even if you don't execute the file.

True, can be a downside if you're planning to test the file, say run it in sandboxie etc, and the program keeps alerting you to 'remove' the file.

Regarding programs we use, every single program mentioned on this forum has caused problems to some users. From Norton, to Avira, Nod, ThreatFire, a-squared, to even using a basic firewall. Even web browsers can lock up systems, crash continually and cause people grief. So to me, no big deal, luck of the draw.

Not sure what you mean here? are you asking for evidence that A2 is the only AM whos reak time scanning is on exe only?

If you look in the A2 forums or ask them directly, they will confirm this is so.

Its really not a major problem - on exe real time protection is all that is required to protect a system. On access is a nice to have feature as it will ensure (in theory) that there are no nasties on your system that are just sitting there, inactive.

An on demand system scan with A2 will scan all the files on your system and in doing this, you can be sure it is clean ad will detect anything you may have downloaded but not run.

The only downside to this method that I can see is if a user were to download a file that was malicious and pass it on to someone else without running it first.
