What does a command line scanner do? What does it add to protection? I notice that Avast Pro has it, but the Home version does not.

    Thanks,
    Jerry

    Hey Jerry,
A commandline scanner is just used for on demand scans.
instead of using a gui to set the options you type in the commands by hand for example C:\program files\alwil\avast\ashcmd.exe -rootkits -compressed C:
BTW the example above will not work i made some of it up. I couldnt find any documentation on google for the avast commandline scanner.
you specify the .exe file you want to run in the example ashcmd.exe (correct) and then you specify parameters and then finaly specify what you want to scan.

commandline scans are genrally used in business to run the scan in the background with all the options setup for scanning, cleaning etc so it doesnt disturb the user.

most antivirus programs come with a commandline scanner.
it can also be used to scan files coming from certain programs for example windows live messenger or winrar.

it doesnt add anything to protection is just another way to do an on demand scan.
