What is your security setup these days?

Thank you, they should call it WebGuard AntiSpyware instead of Enhanced AntiSpyware :)

Not yet a born security setup, but right now I will be formatting a system for a family member, and will be as follows:

    Windows Vista SP2
    Windows Firewall
LUA + SRP + UAC + Windows Defender/Microsoft Security Essentials (I'm leaning towards the MSE.)
IE 8 for online banking and the likes, with security settings tweaked, only to allow certain contents to those same sites.
Opera for daily browsing, also tweaked only to allow certain contents on a per-basis site.

I'm also considering installing Windows Steady State.

Will also disable unnecessary services, which also pose a risk.

Of course, common sense on their heads! The main security!

No need for bloody HIPS, etc. They make system slower, sometimes the cause of failures, etc. They cause confusion, as well.

Windows provides useful protection mechanisms (Not everyone, unfortunately, is aware of that.), so why not use them right?

If within her budget, considering so far everything is free (of course, paid with Windows :D), since she will be making use of Internet via USB connection device, I might recommend, also, getting a router allowing the connection of that device to it.

  4. Currently trying out a new setup...

SafeXP, Seconfig XP: as always. SafeXP closes some of the dumber security holes in the default Windows install, Seconfig fixes a few that SafeXP misses.

(Also, autoplay, being useless and dangerous, gets turned off.)

Windows Firewall: I'll admit an outbound firewall can be useful sometimes, but IMHO when you really need one it's already too late - your system has been subverted and the firewall is no longer trustworthy. So for now I'm going with the built-in firewall.

DriveSentry: tests seem to indicate it's very good at the HIPS thing. It's also very lightweight.

Returnil: two reasons to have this. One, for the anti-execute plugin, which should theoretically back up DriveSentry; two, the actual virtualization system, in case I ever have to deal with e.g. an infected USB drive.

MBAM: backup for scanning suspect files, and for scanning my whole system if it comes to that.

HijackThis: its utility is obvious. ;)

Yet again, still the same after nearly 18 months. The only thing that has changed is the version number of each app.

    You mentioned a cookie app.
Don't know if it works on Firefox but works with all window versions.

Been using this for years now.
Maybe it's what you are looking for. :D

Thanks for the suggestion. I used to use it years ago but it's I.E only and I'm pretty much 99.99% Firefox nowadays(some sites perform better under I.E). I do use workarounds but TBH I like being in control of the cookies rather than the only option of 'block all and allow by exception' .The various add-ons for Firefox don't give me what Cookiewall, CookiePal, CookieCrusher, RTCC4 gave me. They are all exclusive to I.E. Seems cookie's aren't important any more and the talented authors who created those I mentioned appear to have taken the attitude it's not worth doing a Firefox version. Unfortunately, no matter how many Firefox cookie 'add-ons' I try, they just don't do it the way the old cookie manager did it.

Something that clears the cookie cache every xx seconds or minutes. It's not much to ask, but it seems it is. Fruitless search continues...

I'm not using any security softwares.
Not because I'm a pro, but because I don't know what to use.

Using the new setup in my sig

A perfect combination of anti-malware, firewall, and HIPS. :D

When all else fails, EAZ-Fix is my last resort.

Router with NAT/SPI firewall, off line external harddisk with Image and Data backup recovery software

General 'house PC' Intel E5200@3,0Ghz 2GB RAM, 250MB Sata2 HD, 7600GTNvidea (made silent without fan :)

    Real Time on XP Pro

    DefenseWall (Dutch)
Winpatrol Plus (Dutch), reasons for WP
    a) I have browser plug protection disabled in DW
    b) delayed update of A2 through A2cmd /u
    c) Bill's 4th of july offer

On demand (right click context scan)
    * A2 Free (Dutch)

    Unused lisences
    - DriveSentry = disappointed in their 'life long lisence'
    - GeSWall Pro = will be used for Vista 64 PC soon
    - Malware Defender = waiting for playing time on test image

Can I get opinions on these possible setups? What do you think is best?

KIS 2010 + Prevx Edge (surfing is slower with KIS)

AntiVir Premium Suite (without WebGuard) + Prevx Edge

Avast Free + Prevx Edge + Outpost Firewall

Buy NOD32 and pair it with Prevx Edge and Outpost

    NIS 2009 + Threatfire + Prevx Edge

I can't do my #1 option, Outpost + Antivir + Prevx, because I get continuing problems with Outpost and AntiVir. My options are also limited with Vista 64-bit.

I say: KIS 2010 + Prevx Edge, or NIS 2009 + Threatfire and GesWall or Sandboxie, if they are compatible with NIS, I don't know.

Thanks, but Sandoxie isn't available on Vista 64-bit. Not sure if GesWall is yet.

IMHO NIS + TF/Prevx is good. But you really can't go wrong with any of those setups.
