recommendations for a firewall?

    If you have a hardware router with inbuilt NAT Firewall, then combination with that and the Windows Inbuilt one is fine *but* you can get added HIPs protection with something like Comodo IS FW or Online Armor Free or Outpost Free - they are the best.

    I used to buy into the outblocking host firewall thing, untill I started playing with MetaSploit. Many times the outblocking function is totaly worthless. This is not to discount egress traffic filtering, but just that it is difficult to do on the windows host itself it seems. Better to monitor this egress traffic somewhere else on the network with a snort box or something.

    Inbound packet protection has to do with avoiding unwanted intrusion.

    Outbound protection has to do with the user controlling which applications have www access and which don't. As well those concerned with privacy would want outbound management.

    Some users assume that if they trust an application to run on their setup they should not meddle with it and allow it to access www and do whatever it wants. Other's like me don't agree with this trusting concept.

    In the end, it is up to the individual user's view and security policy. It can't be resolved by debate or one piece of SW fits all concepts.

    This is all IMHO of course.

    So before recommending a FW you need to know which policy the user wants to adopt.
