I apolagies for the previous post. But as a Comodo Moderator Volenteer, I know the strength of CIS and it's pretty hard to find an application that's able to do the same.
Can I sujest you GesWall, or Defensewall ? I heard their doing a good job to.

Best regards (and happy testing, you should only use software you feel comfortable with !)

Are there any outstanding issues that you are aware of?
    I can't even find a changelog since syssafety.com is no more. :'(
I just might take advantage of your generosity. ;)

    No worries, Xan.
In retrospect my response was a little over the top as well. :)

I know this is OT, but I just wanted to say this:

With most software CEOs, there is no pretense as to their motive. Their motive is to make money. Some choose to make money by providing great software.
Melih chose to portray himself as a selfless defender of truth and justice, suggesting that he is not like the other software CEOs; he is better than they are.
He placed himself on a pedestal so high that if he were to fall, the results could only be catastrophic.
It is precisely because of Melih's self-righteousness that all of his schemes to recover the investment he made in CIS produced undesirable results.
He could have made CIS a paid product like every other company, and then he wouldn't have to go around trying all of these half-baked schemes to make money, but no, not Melih.
He is such a tragic figure, a victim of his own devices, he could be a character in a Shakespearean play. :(

But enough of this OT nonsense. ;)

I am not sure about this GesWall, but I am now quite interested in this DefenseWall.

I am wondering now if Sandboxie+Malware Defender+Defensewall could be ultimate combo, allowing me to banish blacklisting forever? :shifty:

    cheers,
    axl.

Ah! The truth will out! Another idiot with an axe to grind.

If you don't like a product, fine, but if you wish to make silly stories, at least do some research.

There is the original, old school hips,DiamondCS ProcessGuard,I have only used the free, somewhat limited version, but the paid version should be solid enough.

    Duly noted.
So what do you think of the Sandboxie-Defensewall-Malware Defender combo?

My understanding is there are some issues with the level of support provided by DiamondCS.

I dont know, that may well be the case.
As I said with the free edition it was pretty much "as is".
Just another name, if not a valid option.,

Well, perhaps it was needed, but let's forget about it ;).

Comodo's reply : Having setup cabforum.org to create a more trusted and secure internet, having worked on EV SSL to bring about a new trust indicator....having done so much work trying to create a new standards for DV Certs (still working on it) so that they will have better validation...having been so vocal about these DV certs and talking against these DV certs publicly (my latest rant about them http://www.comodovision.com/?p=343), and while godaddy owns 49% of the DV market followed by Verisign with 45%...Comodo only has 4-5% of this DV market.....we are the guys who is trying to get rid of DV!!!!

As Defensewall is isolating all the untrusted applications it's pretty much doing the same as sandboxie AFAIK. So you won't need 1 of them both. Never tried Malware Defender, so I can't say anything about it...

    Best regards axl,

i am just testing comodo and to be honest it is a solid security package;) what i like about comodo is the D+ module and it's active process list:cool: you could easilly terminate malware process running in memory with this tool and put malware in a cage for ever if you want to:D i think is a cool program,i heard alot of bad stories about this companny and some people also testify as a good security program but what it counts for me is that it really works without bugs so far so good:thumb:

That is the most common sense post (along with all ellison64's posts here) all this garbage about how Comodo are the 'Devil incarnate' makes me laugh.
If Comodo had a history of decades in making totally crap, system churning security software (Like Symantec and McAfee and Trend Micro), I could understand it.
As they haven't - its nonsense.

A good alternative to CIS is Online Armor Free FW. But I like CIS and it does the job well and is reviewed as one of the *top* 3 FWs (paid or freeware) in the entire market.
Eat your hearts out PcTools, Zone Alarms, Outpost Free, Norton, McAfee - you just don't reach the knees of CIS or Online Armor.

Actually, and I could be wrong here because I just started to study this program, Outpost Free could perhaps be moved from the PcTools, Zone Alarm, Norton, McAfee group to the CIS, Online Armor group??

Yes the results out today show it has moved up, but still behind CIS but better than Online Armor Free.
Thanks for prompting me to look that up on Matuosec!:

This thread is beginning to drift again and I am fearful that the mods may close it before I got the help I was looking for.
The title of this thread is HIPS to replace Comodo Defense+, not "Am I an idiot to want to ditch CIS?" or "Is CIS better than OA according to Matousec?"!

The only reason I elaborated on my thoughts about the Comodo organization is to make clear that I have no problem with the application itself, so I wouldn't have to deal constantly with remarks about how CIS is so powerful!
If someone told me they wanted something other than an IPod because they don't like Steve Jobs' turtleneck, I wouldn't spend all my time questioning their sanity or intelligence; if I knew of something equivalent I would say so, and if I didn't I would not say anything at all!

    Now:
Anyone else please have any advice on HIPS to replace Defense+?
    Thanks!

Mellow. No, the mods will probably only close this thread if it gets nasty or personal, otherwise they would constantly be closing almost everything. I have learned more from off-topic threads than on-topic threads because the majority of them do go off topic from time to time, then come back, then wander again ... so much learning. I have been educated that way in this very thread. Most forums would quickly cease to exist without off-topic threads, its almost their very life blood generating new ideas and questions. A patient and open (and forgiving) mind can learn much by observing the life of these thread thingies (with a gentle nudge from a Mod when really needed which isn't very often).

It's left to people like me (and others) to sweep up the pieces of people's systems after they've been experimenting with (mostly) security based software, registry "cleaners" and tweaking tools. In as far as scores go I would rather look at those in the various support forums than on Matousec, and would pick the application with the least bug reports, error messages and blue screens against it. None of the so called leading suites in either free or commercial format can claim much success here. I know it's not easy for the coders to make stuff that will install and run error free into a system that's probably unstable in the first place but that's not the point. Average people rule the planet as far as PC ownership is concerned so these things need to work for them, and not just the likes of us.

My point is that it is possible to combine selected components and get them to work without problems and if anyone want's proof try a 60 day trial with BullGuard. Several best buy awards and great test results (which BullGuard has) don't always mean a lot but their forum is almost empty, and this does!

I read this post four different times after logging on on four different occasions, and I still can't think of an appropriate response.

Maybe there is none, considering its depth...

I use Geswall with Comodo Firewall. Malware Defender would work really good too. I don't care much for the firewall and the hips nagging me together. So I didn't install D+ and put GesWall in the mix.

    @ CJmonge

As long as you have it running in the pro-active configuration (clean PC or safe mode), otherwise you only think you are protected.

    @Apathy and Jmonge

Why use both Comodo and Malware Defender?, one should do or when you like a easier to configure alternative go Outpost free (and block the news reader, which really is an Outpost advertising instrument).

When you use DefenseWall, you don't need an other HIPS anymore. Only thing I can think of using DW is that it allows installs of BHO - Active-X and Toolbars (but still will protect you from doing any harm by them), becasue DW is set for maximum useability. Simple Windows Defender or WinPatrol would be enough to deal with that.

    UPDATE:
I was looking to ditch CIS because of "questionable" practices by Comodo, but after reading, and posting, many posts, this has become a lower priority.
I will still test the recommendations, since it is not good to have only one way to go.

So in summary, the products which will be given serious consideration because of the help received in this thread:
    OA.
System Safety Monitor ( I know some still use Kerio 2.1.5 but I am not comfortable with dead software, but I will still take a look at this for my XP boxes).
    Malware Defender.

    Thanks to all who helped.
If I have any questions about the above software, I will post in that product-specific thread.

Think long term, if you are going to be getting Windows 7, then choose and learn how to use software that will work on Windows 7.

I wasn't convinced by Vista, and I am not convinced by this Windows 7.

IMO the OS should be as transparent as possible, because you don't buy a PC to use OS, you buy it to use applications.
If you play games on your PC then of course, you have no choice but to be on the bleeding edge.
