The worst part is that she/he actually googled it and could only find removal instructions! The words "virus" and "malware" are all over the place, yet she is still hunting for another download linko_O .

Telling her virus and trojans are compatible with all windows,
    is funny but not helpful.

She just played off the real help she was given..and chose this answer?

Does she even know what trojan/virus are, is what I am wondering..
    doesn't sound like it

The post may well be fake, however, the criminals would NOT still be spending time and effort in making and promoting these rogues if users were not falling for it and installing them.

I believe some of these criminals have made millions from these scams.

Removing the rogue is one thing, but if someone has paid money / registered one, they should be contacting their bank / credit card to get their card blocked. These guys are criminals and wont think twice about stealing your money once they have your card details.

These rogues are a serious threat to a good number of users. Gone are the days when malware writers wanted to just screw your system - now its all about money - taking users money and or stealing / capturing their financial information.

    Puss

What's even more astonishing is some of these people who have installed these rogue applications also have a bona fide security program on their system as well!

This is all so true. We, those who know about stuff like rogue sites/programs, need to continue to share this info with any and all people we can. It is sad that there are people out there without conscience who make these rogue products- its almost sadder that there are those who laugh about it.

Indeed. Many rogues are marketed as antispyware apps or registry cleanerss. The criminal businesses behind these things go to great lengths to a) get people to install the application b) for it to go undetected by true AVs / AMs.

Many rogues change the apps fingerprint every few days so as to avoid detection. There are a couple I check reguarly - and one in particular has an unbelievable domain name - real AM vendors would love it as its so legit. The application is changed every few days and thus vendors will keep having to update signatures - many dont bother - or are not quick enough.

I saw that question on Yahoo! Answers the day it came out and I was going to post it here on Wilders but I didn't :( . I enjoyed reading it though . I think it was just a joke because the person that made that question is getting tons of attention now. If it's not a joke, then I don't really know what to say.

I can't help thinking about 'mafia' style tactics to provide protection: pay for malware to keep other malware away!

I wonder what your thoughts would be if your daily newspaper would start producing garbage headlines such as WOW!, OINK OINK or DING DONG?

    +1 :thumb:

If the title at least had the words "XP antivirus 2009" in it, I could have saved 5 minutes of my life finding out about something I care nothing about.

How is anyone supposed to know what a thread titled "WOW!", is about? o_O
