After reading of more questionable tactics by Comodo such as issuing DV certs with no verification of the intention of the cert requestors, I have decide to ditch CIS and use Outpost Firewall Pro.
Can someone direct me to a HIPS that has the power of CIS Defense+.
I am interested in any HIPS that meet this criterion, except Online Armor.

    Thank you for any assistance.

  2. PCTools Firewall Plus, though not as leak-proof as Comodo, has a pretty good HIPS; you could use that instead of Outpost.

(I don't quite trust it though; at one point I saw PCTools AV crash when I changed the Windows GUI theme, so I'm a bit suspicious of the quality of PCTools stuff at the moment.)

Online Armor Free also has HIPS (which can be installed without the firewall), and is pretty good, though I personally find it too crippled to use.

PC Tools Firewall Plus 3.14 version is available I host the file. That has code injection still better than anything out there except for Rising Free Firewall which comes in first because it doesn't bother you and it only does if it has detected something new it updates and has better security.

Thank you for your input, Gullible Jones.

ATM I am pretty much set on Outpost Pro.

I tried it a couple of years ago, and I was very impressed with the thoughtful layout of the GUI, and the feeling of being in full control. Very nice logging too.
Unfortunately, the programmer in charge of the system level design did not at that time have the skills of the programmer in charge of the GUI; I have never experienced so many BSODs from a security app until I tried Outpost Pro.
Of course, this was two years ago; I am hoping that the systems programmer of Outpost now has the skillz of Comodo's system programmer. :)

Because of good gui and superior sense of control, I am still willing to give Outpost Pro a good chance.
I am sorry, I am not interested in using OA Free, and I have no logical or rational justification for my position; I simply do not care for the CEO.
This is similar to why I do not use Apple products; I simply do not like Steve Jobs.
(I do not like Bill Gates either, but he has a monopoly. :D )

    Hi Wildest,

Been using Outpost Pro for almost one year now without any problems, no BSOD either.:)
As for HIPS I am using DefenseWall. I know It's not a pure HIPS but a Policy-Based Sandbox. Anyway, those two have served me well so far and better, my system runs very light. You could also try EQSecure 3.41. There is lots of information here at Wilders about it.

Good luck with Outpost - it's a great firewall.

One small clarification about DV certs, though. The very nature of DV certificates, as defined in their specification, is purely to verify the ownership of the domain - not the intended purpose of the domain. Comodo are not alone in this - all CA's issue DV certs. EV-SSL certs were specced to overcome the shortcomings of DV certs.

Please bear in mind, I'm not saying Comodo are or are not innocent, just that they're not alone in issuing Domain Validation certs that validate a domain.

Again, best of luck with OFP.

    Cheers,
    CT :)

Is there any independent webpage confirming this?

Thanks, but I think you forgot to include recommendation of HIPS to replace Defense+, instead of just elaborating on this OT DV certs...

Unlike the others, Comodo is selling certs in addition to providing security software.
This is like selling security camera and then selling police badge to anyone with bucks, not to mention previous fiasco of Ask toolbar, etc.
No thanks, I can't trust company willing to do anything to make bucks.

I am just looking for Defense+ replacement, thanks.

Wildest, you should really take a look at Malware Defender if a classical HIPS is what you are looking for.

Sorry, I was just providing info for others. Mea culpa :)

As LoneWolf suggested, Malware Defender is an excellent choice for a HIPS.

You're searching for a replacement as strong as defense+ and you don't want to use OA. Well, happy hunting I would say, the only thing that I can come up with is a harddrive virtualiser ...

    best of luck searching

I think u have only three options:

1- OA- best one IMO but less granular control. also file and reg protection is limited
2- MD- more granular control than OA if you wish so
3- Outpost( I never used so I am not sure).

It seems a leader is emerging from the pack. :)

I didn't know that this is being developed by Torchsoft, who also develop the (IMO) very good Registry Workshop (I used the latter for some time, but it was overkill for my needs).
The screenshots of this Malware Defender are a little frightening; it is clear that I cannot treat it as a drop-in replacement for Defense+, and I will have to spend considerable time and effort to tame this beast.
I will install in an XP VM and evaluate there first.

    Thanks.

Now what is the purpose of these statements?
    What is your motive?
These statements are nonsensical, and diminish the level of respect you have generated with your previous contribution.:(

I have not used Outpost Pro in over two years, so I am not well versed in the capabilities of its latest version.
If it has the same power and control of Defense+ then I will take a serious look; I am not interested ATM in getting less security, even if it is only a 2% reduction (I am referring specifically to the HIPS aspect, not the firewall per se).

I have already stated quite clearly that I am not interested in OA for no good reason, yet you insist on referencing OA.
Is this some not-so-clever attempt at appearing impartial? :cautious:

Thanks, but I have good feelings about this Malware Defender which has been recommended here to me, so I anticipate a short but rewarding hunting trip. ;)

Now what is point of this sarcastic smiley after wishing me luck?
I suspect that you do not truly wish me success in my endeavor.
My request was specifically for a HIPS to replace Defense+; if you have no knowledge of a solution maybe you should have not replied at all instead of making unhelpful comment such as this.

Two years ago I took advantage of a giveawayoftheday promotion of System Safety Monitor, and although it took a while, I learned to appreciate its power.
Unfortunately I had to do a re-install of XP on that particular machine because of some non-malware-related issue, and I never got around to re-installing SSM.
While researching HIPS here, I discovered the sad demise of System Safety, and now I am leery of one-trick-pony security companies.
Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't EQSecure a one-product operation? :(

At least Torchsoft has another well-established product in Registry Workshop.

I must say though, I am quite surprised and saddened about the limited amount of options available in the HIPS market. :'(

If comodo security was that good for you, then you would still be using it wouldn't you?.Security depends on many factors including ease of use so im not sure that a 2% reduction even comes into the equation.Just pick one that your happy with is my advice.

Just to be clear, I am not trying to ditch CIS because of its quality; I am trying to ditch CIS because I question the quality of the organization behind it, and was in fact somewhat happy with the product until my faith in Comodo was shaken.
IAC, I really just want help in replacing CIS; since I am not questioning its capabilities, my reasons for wanting to replace it should be irrelevant to this discussion.

Mmm personally i dont care about the company behind a product as long as the product is half decent ,and does what it says on the tin.I have malware defender ,and i also have a lifetime license of outpost pro however for ease of use i prefer rising as a firewall and basic hips and geswall or defencewall as my main protection.Im currently leaning towards defencewall because im fed up with geswall lack of support basically.Windows live messenger latest edition ,doesnt work with geswall and they haven't fixed it in weeks, so im now using defencewall.Outpost and malware defender are brilliant if you have the time and inclination to persevere with them.I tried comodo once for a few days ,but just didnt like it ..no particular reason just a feeling.Best thing to do is trial them, outpost has a 30 day trial.

Before I started this thread I wondered if this should be in the "Other Firewalls" section or the "Other Anti-Malware" section.
Given the recommendations received, I am thinking that maybe this should really be in the "Other Anti-Malware" section?
If I am correct, I would appreciate it if a moderator could move this thread, even though it seems the thread is coming to a definitive conclusion.
    Thanks.

P.S. Thanks to all who took the time to reply; this has been most enlightening. :D

Witness the power of marketing where "new" is like soap powder, all improved but still doesn't get your socks any whiter.

First they fed us suites maybe to keep the bug reports and blue screens flowing and they've certainly succeeded in that. Next up it was cloud technology but still the infections keep rolling in.

I'm just happy to stick with what I know works. My first line of defense is me, then a solid firewall without too many bells like Rising followed by Avira free and a HIPS. I'm actually using System Safety Monitor (last commercial version) and don't find it dated at all. I'm using it on XP Pro SP3 with no issues.

There are to my knowledge at least two people authorized to give keys for this and I'm one of 'em. If you (or anyone else) would like to revisit this software drop me a PM and I'll cough up.
