    Hi there,

Installed Vista on a new Dell machine.

It was fine till I installed Vista & Drivers.

    1. How can I view all files/folders, seen/hidden as medium sized icons & not tiles?

    2. The display is 1900 X 1200………which is real small since I use an external USB Logitech comfy laser KB & mouse………When I try decreasing the resolution……the desktop icons become distorted & names which are underlined get blurred/darkened…… on reboot I get a windows message displayed that 1900x 1200 is the ideal resolution for this machine so please change…..how can I fix this issue…..How can I decrease the resolution , without destroying the awesome display /colors/fonts?

    3. My Sony Vaio has great 1680 X1050 display……….easy to read etc………...desktop icons, fonts all have a super display despite that it uses an Intel graphics accelerator vs. this which has a 256 MB graphic card.

    4. How can one view the total Commit Charge/Page file size, on the bottom of task manager as in XP?

Any help to resolve these issues would be highly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Doc.

In Vista open your folder/drive in windows explorer and in "views" tab select your desired preference. Once selected then click "organize" and select "folder and search options" then in "view" select apply to all folders. Now every folder will open in your desired setting.
If your display is a LCD you should always run it in its native resolution. At any other resolution the display will look blurry.
Since the two display resolutions are different so you will need to get used to the new resolution of 1900x1200. It is not a function of your video card but the native resolution of the two displays is different. You should run both in their native resolutions.
In Vista, run task manager, select "performance tab" and at the bottom under system it will show you your total pagefile size and the amount being used at the moment.

Before Nov 2008 (I think), Nividia had an agreement with OEM manufacturers that Nividia will send them the drivers for the Video cards installed on their machines and they (OEM vendors) will perform testing and then release the driver to their customers. But this caused a lot of delays and problems and the drivers were always outdated by the time the OEM vendors released them to the public.

So, since Nov 2008 Nvidia has decided to release the drivers themselves. I have been using the latest drivers from nvidia for my geforce 8600M GT since december without problems, just had to install an BIOS update from Dell before I switched to nvdia drivers. Everything is working fine. So I recommend drivers from Nvidia.

If it is managed by the OS, then the OS will decide what size it will be and change it accordingly. My vista 32 bit system currently has a 6339 MB size page file.

The difference would be the driver version. The drivers available on Nvidia are newer ones with bug fixes, enhancements etc. It is recommended to use the latest drivers, but If you do not need the bug fixes or improvements then it is always better to use the driver that came installed on your system.

    Thanks again.

Since I don’t play games on 1710 & as you said best is the native resolution....so hardly feel any difference using the 3 drivers.....48 MB, 55 MB & 122 MB.

    >Well, I am using Dell XPS M1530 and my BIOS version is A12. Dell may have different BIOS chains for different models, but I would recommend using the latest BIOS if possible. Your Model is not listed on the Nvidia page as the one that needs a BIOS update before installing the driver so you should be okay.

    >I also noticed that the driver for your system was released on Feb 11 2009. Nvidia usually releases new drivers after 3 months so a new driver for your configuration is imminent. You can wait for that if you like or go ahead and install this driver and install the new one when it becomes available.

    >I think you have got a incorrect idea about what a new driver will do. It will not change your native resolution as that is a function of your LCD. No matter what video card you use or which driver version for a particular video card, your native resolution will remain the same. If you want to change the native resolution, change the LCD.

    >Lastly as I said before I normally use the latest drivers for my hardware so I will recommend the latest video card driver.

    >I also wanted to mention if your screen resolution is very small, you can experiment with the DPI setting in Vista. By default Vista is setup to a DPI of 96, you can change it to 120 and see if you like the new look. By increasing the DPI everything will become bigger, though some icons will get slightly distorted.

On desktop right click and select "personalize", on the new window in the left side pane select "adjust font size (DPI)". Select "larger scale" and "OK" a reboot will be required. See if this setting solves your problem, if not then repeat the above procedure and set DPI back to default 96.

    Hope this helps..
