    Hi,

I'm still using comodo firewall pro 2.4.18.184 (the last release before 3.0) and am wondering if anyone else out there still prefers this version over later versions?

I have tried comodo 3 with HIPS and without it but never could get the hang of it. Since I never got an virus or trojan etc with 2.4 I went back to it and still have never got an infection of any sort (and I use the net a lot including p2p). I also use Avira Antivir Premium latest version and SAS paid, and peerguardian, but that is about it (all on a computer still running win XP pro 32 bit, having tried Vista 64 bit and hated it).

So do you think I can safely stay with 2.4 on the basis of the Australian saying "if ain't broke don't fix it" or should I move to the latest version of comodo (3.9, I think?).

    Hi,

I'm eXPerience, a Comodo volenteer moderator. If you indeed feel comfortable with CFP 2 you're free to stay with that version. If configured correctly, it's pretty strong. Of course I would sujest you to try the latest CIS version (3.9, or the at the end of the month coming 3.10 version) It has features better protection and the pop-ups are tremendously decreased since the CFP V3 ;)

So I would say, give it a spin if you want, but if you like CFP 2 it's perhaps better you wait for CIS V4 :)

Thanks eXPerience. I'm guess I'm asking if I know how to use 2.4 and use it well, will it be better than using version 3.9 badly? I realise 2.4 isn't as strong as 3.9, but it is still fairly effective, if used properly and in conjunction with other security software, isn't it?

I've used CFP in the past, but now I'm using CIS. It's pretty quite, only when installing I hope they'll add a installer detector.

Again, if you have CFP2 and you configured it well, you should be protected against most (perhaps not all) threaths.

What other security products are you using?

I used Comodo 2.4. It's a good user friendly FW. I had the same experience as you trying to go to v3 due to my inexperience. I found OnlineArmor and have been using it almost 2 years. If you like Comodo v2.4 you'll love OA. ;)

    Thanks for that view twl845.
Is OA as easy to use as comodo 2.4? Are you using the free or paid version?

When you install OA it will scan your system and you can trust your existing apps. Then it will go into Learning Mode for 2 minutes and you're ready to go. Then you'll only get pop ups when something changes. There's Standard Mode for the rest of us, and Advanced Mode if you like to tweek. I'm using the paid version.

    Hi,philebus
In eyes of me,PCTools is also very good.It is a little simple. And it is also a pure firewall. It has the kernel of Locknstop firewall, strong and safe:D .

I'm not sure what the free version has. You can get that from the Tallemu.com site.

In short, OA doesn't give :

    but nobody cares

    it also doesn't give

What I do care about... For that reason I would stay with CFP2 at the moment ;). But if you really want to change, give it a spin and see what fits you best !

OA and Comodo are the best at the moment, you can't go wrong with those

Wow, it is interesting to observe progression of method by which OA agents hijacked this thread.

    Hi Folks,

Are these active agents of the OA conspiracy ?

OA Free also has an unmodifiable restricted ports list which can be a bit of a pain, especially if you are a techie who runs something trying to use a restricted port !

On one of the recent specials I switched from OA Free to Paid with the 2-year license, maybe there is more HIPS notification. e.g maybe the direct disk access warning is not in Free ?

Both are good products. I dumped the CIS firewall on another puter at work (Revo worked fine for the uninstall) and put on Outpost Free to get a little compare. (Surprisingly nice so far, although it is a very limited environment.) Seems to me the interface on OA Armor is definitely very serviceable (easy to navigate) yet not elegant, sometimes you have to look program by program to see eg. which programs have disk access. They have an interesting twist with both a history and a log file, I am not that accomplished a firewall user to do a lot of comparisons, I think OA started out as much a HIPS as a firewall so when they went to firewall they might not have all the elegance of even the old-tyme ZA and Kerio styles. Very fine program though, with dedicated support.

Since the weaknesses of OA Free were mentioned here, I thought I would add one or two, I can't tell you too much about Comodo except that I found the program annoying and some other stuff off-the-wall. However I probably would find their backup program competent -- if I was using Comodo software.

    Shalom,
    Steven Avery

    Hi,

    The OP here.

OK so after all this chat about OA free and paid firewall, I guess my question is whether I should stay with comodo 2.4 (for all the reasons I mentioned above) or move to OA free, or, if that isn't at least as safe as comodo 2.4, then to OA paid. Money isn't the primary issue for me, safety and ease of use are.

Any direct answers to this, remembering that I have not got an infection ever using the comodo 2.4 + avira antivir premium. Basically, is there any compelling reason I should change?

Forget any fanboys on either side, if you're happy with what you have then stick with it, or if curious, try another product for a few weeks and see how it strikes you and stick with it or change back depending on how you feel. Sometimes non-techie, simplified speak is required, which is lucky as that's all I know.

You are perfectly fine with Comodo 2.4. I use the Vista Firewall myself and a free AV and never had a problem. Some people still use Kerio (many years old) and have no problems. If this thread continues you will have every firewall and imaging program known to man suggested to you. Again, Comodo 2.4 is perfectly fine. Considering you have had no issues with it, why bother to change?

The last two posts convinced me, I'm sticking with comodo 2.4....until I get bored with it, or heaven forbid, an infection.

    Something else to consider:
Do you really want to have to learn a new interface for no good reason, or lose the confidence you currently have in knowing that your firewall won't BSOD your current setup?

IMO you made the right decision, although I suspect you already knew the answer to your question. ;)
