    Hi everybody,

despite of my poor english i tried to read and understand all other topics which deals with virtualization.

After a hard time reading, i still wondering....

    I'm looking for a virtualization program that allows me to switch virtual/real system without a reeboting;

For example if i go on the internet under virtualization to protect my system and after want to play a game in solo mode, i guess after reeboting my progression will be deleted right ?

If i buy music on itunes and reboot after i will have to download again after rebooting right ?

Thanks in advance to enlighten me.

It seems that this program virtualize a complet os system in another one.

My need is to virtualize my os and work on it but with a switch on/off without rebooting.

    Thanks.

If you are running XP, ShadowUser Pro will allow to carry across reboots the same session (+ you can retain some changes if you wish) problem: expensive (I think the price dropped to 50 $, not sure though) and it doesn't run on Vista.

Shadow Defender won't carry sessions across reboots, but it'll allow you to shadow your session without a reboot, you can also commit (retain some changes) in shadow mode, it will run on XP and Vista (no 64 bit alas).

There's also Returnil which is very similar to Shadow Defender and has a free version, but I have no experience with it.

    What OS are you using?

    For Windows:
VMWare Player with VMWare Converter. Seperate products but a complete free solution.
VMWare Converter will create a VM of your current install for use in VMWare products.
Then load it into VMWare Player.

Test it in the VM and if it works swimingly add to the real OS.

I'm running Vista and i see in another post that you need to restart to enter a shadow session with shadowUser.

This process is like virtualbox, you run a full virtual os in you own os, my need are just to virtualize my os and switch on/off.

What about shadow defender with exclusion ? if i isolate my game and save game file ? if i isolate itunes and the musique file...

    Thanks for the help.

EDIT: I see that on shadow defender there is an option to commit now. if i had well understand it allows you during a shadow session to switch file to the original volum. Am I right ?

Try Returnil Premium 2.0.1.9002 (with commit changes)
    or
    Returnil free 2.0.1.9002
    or
Returnil Lab. version (with multiple partition support, file and folder exclusions, etc)

    or
    join beta testing Returnil 2009

But then all these files are part of the real system.
So if Ransomware, a File Infector or Killfiles comes for a visit... :ouch:

    Cheers

I agree with you but it means that the infected file come from itunes.Do you think that a virtualised file infected can infects a real session file ?

    What a difficult subject....

    I can help here.

I see what you mean that if you want to permanently save files you have to save them to your main OS.

Generally any movie files or any file for that matter that happen to be infected remain dormant until they are opened up and executed.

I notice you have sandboxie in your sig.

when you open up and run your movie files from Itunes Force them to run inside Sandboxie that way if they are infected they can't harm your OS or any other system partitions. so for example if you use VLC to run Itune files add VLC.exe in sandbox settings to force all movies to run in sandboxie.
