I just upgraded NOD32 from V3 to V4. Now I have a NOD32 icon near the top of my Thunderbird window. It's on a row by itself and doesn't seem to be able to be moved. Is there any way to prevent this icon and/or text from appearing in Thunderbird?

Yes. Enter advanced setup tree ->Miscellaneous->Email client integration.
'Integrate into Mozilla Thunderbird' should be unchecked.

OK, but does this just remove the UI element or does it disable checking of email?

If you uncheck Advanced setup>Miscellaneous>Email client integration>Integrate into Mozilla Thunderbird then it completely disable integration to Thunderbird.

If only you want to hide it go to Thunderbird menu and uncheck View>Toolbars>ESET NOD32 Antivirus.
In case of ESS name of toolbar is "ESET Smart Security".

Right! I discovered that, but didn't discover how to get rid of it entirely, In retrospect "View -> Toolbars" is somewhat obvious.
