I bought TI Home 09 to create an image stored on my USB External HDD

I bought TI Home 09 to create an image stored on my USB External HDD. I probably should have asked this before I bought it. From the PDF that is offered here stating that I can also use the USB HDD to boot to and run the restore program made with TI. Is that correct?

I do not mind using a DVD to boot to first, but, I have so much space, that that would be a good thing to have the whole recovery system in one place. My question is has anybody completed this method sucessfully (Using the USB HDD)?

I would also like to get Ubuntu on board, so, I will have to get advice on that too. I will probably do it in step by step style because I am not so familiar with either program. (DD & TI)

I know it would be best to create my image/back up and recovery disk/media first... Am I correct?

I just did a trail run to see if I could restore an image from an external USB hard drive. I had to use the restore CD that you create when you first install TI Home 2009. The restore was quick and east with no headaches.

Check out the first item on line 4 of my signature below. Yes, you can create an Acronis bootable hard drive with two partitions. The first partition contains the bootable TrueImage Rescue CD files; and the second partitions can contain your backup archives.

 

Thank you. I have been reading the forums on both TI and DD as I am using both to accomplish some tasks. I am a little nervous after reading those and the manuals (I am not done yet). I originally did not even think to use my USB for the bootable and the image/backup. I was all set to use a lightScribe DVD. It would mean a lot of conveinance for me. I do not have to do it that way though.

Yes I have seen your guides and my question is : isn't the guide referring mostly to the flash drives?

I was reading through it and I am sure what it is I should be doing for a USB HDD and not a Flash. So, I figured you meant that the guide has the same steps as for the USB HDD. I went to the link that gives a title that specifically is for the USB Hard drives.

It state at the begining: "...hopefully anyone with True Image 10, a USB flash drive and USB hard disk can successfully create an Acronis Bootable USB Hard Disk. "

"I kinda stopped there until later. I was not going to use any flash drive so, I thought it meant that I would need both to make the HDD bootable.

As I read both the texts the lines seem a little blurred to me. Is the same steps for using the flash drive exactly the same for USB External HDD's?

One of the things I got from this is there is a lot to getting it done. It says that at some point I would have to reach into my case, unplug the main drive, boot to BIOS setup, switch to boot to the USB Drive(which I don't understand, it's not bootable yet), and finally I can get to the core of the steps to install. I may have that out of order. I am just saying I need to gleen for my self the steps. At least, just going through the guides, that is what I got generally.

I know you did not know this before. I am in a wheelchair and I cannot just go into my case and do that part of it. I would have to get someone to come and assist me. I am not sure if I can get somebody in time enough.

It seems a little difficult to do at face value. What I'll do is comb the guides again and see if I can come up with the step by step that I can clearly understand and pose it to you all, to make sure I am interpreting the guides right. It maybe just me, with all my years of manual/help file writing for my apps, that I have got stuck in a certain mode of thinking. Maybe its just me.

I suppose I should update the titles to be a little more clear. The guides on my website were created for USB flashdrives, but work for USB hard drives (there is a note about this) too as well as internal drives. The Grub4DOS ISO method is especially flexible as it doesn't require the drive to be repartitioned or reformatted as part of the process.

The "Create a Bootable USB Hard Drive" guide was created quite some time ago. The process is still the same for TI 11 and TI 2009. If you've read through that guide, you'll know why both a flashdrive and USB hard drive are required. The flashdrive is required just to obtain the MBR code since the Acronis Media Builder program won't work directly on USB hard drives. Alternate MBR images are available from the troubleshooting link in my signature.

If you have any specific questions or problems regarding this subject, just ask. I've found Grub4DOS on a USB hard drive (or internal drive) to be the easiest method.
