I believe 1047 which is currently in testing will be the next module on the update servers for both v3 and v4.

I believe I read in one of these threads that ver 3 will stay at 1040, ver 4 will soon be updated to 1047. I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure that's what I read somewhere.

what dont you like about version 4 ? surely you should upgrade to this for the added protection & performance, that version 4 must offer over version 3.

Well for a start, ver3 works out of the box without any fiddling !!!!!

    Ver 4 does not.

    Ver3 works with Vista SP2, Ver4 does not !!!!

Two pretty important reasons I would say.

v3 has had many months of bugfixing and it's teething phase was over a long time ago, you can't compare a new product to a mature product.

Well i must have a special system then, coz my version 4 works out the box!...and as far as i can tell it has worked with vista sp2 for about 1 week now.

Admitedly ESS should of had sp2 compatibilty long before it was pushed to windows update, were most "normal/novice" users would just click on install, not knowing that ESS would possibly cause problems.

I installed sp2 only when eset confirmed a week ago that it was safe to do so and it installed like a charm!

Lets face it there are millions of users out there where it must be working "out of the box" this forum after all, shows that only a very small minority of users have problems!

I'm still getting the fire wall blocking inappropriately. I suspect google is not the only site to distribute it's processing eg

A new product should not be released until ALL bugs are ironed out.

it's a personnal thing for me, i hate v4, the icon, the way it performs, the interface, i liked v2 and v3 because they are neat and light, they install and un-install cleanly, they cause no slowdown.
v4 just seems like a badly thrown together and dropped trifle to me.
if it wasnt for the firewall in v3 causing problems with my router losing my pc, which was solved by support but involved disabling the firewall in a way windows firewall seemed more secure i would still be using it as i have 6 months license left.
i know eset have to go where the market dictates, it just seems sad to me. i really liked eset and nod.
still, you cant please all the people all the time as they say.

Then who cares, you aint using it. I think version 4 is working great. As I said the other day it works better then all the rest in my viewpoint. And yes, I do use it on 3 computers.

Quit bringing up past issues and look at it today with fresh eyes.

indeed they do, i always have two active subscriptions just in case, the sp2 incident for example.
as i said it's a personal thing and the reasons i started using nod 32, at this time, no longer exist in the current version, so i wont be renewing, doesnt mean that will not happen in the future but that's how it is today.

yesterday, just before my first post, just to check what components had been updated, i got a cant read firewall error, 4 possibles in my steam folder, ok both these glitches were rectified after the first update, but doesnt look good if you've just bought the program.
as i said it's just not for me.

    A spurious argument.

    * Microsoft has a sophisticated program to update their products. ESET has none. I am not a champion for Microsoft, but I have a mechanism for Windows that I can access that will update me without any technical expertise. That's what I pay for and know in advance of how it will work.

    * You pay for an ESET subscription, and their upgrades / bugs / bug fixes are so problematic, that they cant / wont push them out in any automated manner - or even offer an email advice. That's a very strange way of doing business for a company with a good reputation for NOD32. ESS is its achilles heel ?

    * I read this forum and its issues, and end up back at 3.0.684.. ESET Smart Security is now a product for the technically minded who know how to deal with the issues. WAY BEYOND the skills of "out of the box" users.

    * Its a pity that ESS can be a fine product that I now cant recommend to my family and friends as I know they wouldn't be able to handle the issues.

This isn't some excuse to avoid fixing bugs, but you do NOT pay for running their software. Infact reading the EULA basically ESET lend you the right to use their software for free. Your subscriptions pays for the DB updates.

spot on! thanks for the update eset, i am happy to be back on board again, i have tested others and everything has 'stuff' i don't want or need. This is why i like v3 it's just the basics, like v2.7, i know it doesnt have the self defence or advanced scanning/ cleaning of v4 but this is a gaming pc, the entire pc is backed up to an external hard drive. i would go without but am worried about my online accounts getting hacked.
v3 is leaner than nod32 +windows firewall on this pc.
while looking for an equivilent package, i discovered if you want a firewall this has become, as the version before it did, unique.
always keep a slimmed down simpler version available, for people who don't want the latest protection, just a set and forget basic av fw package.
    many thanks.
