Hey folks. I had a quick question regarding anti-malware scanners. I currently have KIS 9 8.0.0506 and A-squared 4.5. My A-squared is running out soon and I was looking for something that wasn't as intense. I was looking at either counterspy, superspyware or prevx. I've tried superspyware before and wasn't too impressed. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

Well Prevx detects using behavior + blacklist so I'd go with Prevx. Which I have done :D

Notepad is much less intense -- if protection isn't an issue. :)

If protection IS an issue, however, then it is hard to equal A-squared, with its combination of Mamutu behavior blocker, & highly-ranked Ikarus AV.

However, if you must switch, Avira Premium plus Threatfire would be a powerful alternative.

+1...this is a nice, light & effective combination (which is about to get even better with the upcoming beta release of a whole new host of technologies from Prevx)

I do like A2 but I already have my anti-virus through KIS. Is prevx fairly light? A2 is using 88k on average and thats just for the a2service.exe. I don't dare ask which is better here.

Prevx is very light, I highly recommend it.

    Few options...

    1) I'd keep using KIS on its own. You can always download an on-demand scan from Dr.Web's CureIt or use a-squared's online scanner (which detects/removes).

    2) Otherwise if you prefer, I'd use a-squared's anti-malware on its own. Could add a CureIt scan every now and then, or the Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool scan every now and then.

    3) If you want something light, I'd use prevx edge. Then use any of the above, CureIt, a-squared online scanner, or Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool - all which need to be downloaded on an as-need basis.

I would simply keep Kaspersky and download the free version A squared. Simply run an on-demand scan ones in a while and you should be fine ;)

KIS 2009 can be very powerful, especially if you're not a novice in computer security and know how to tighten the settings.

The paid version of A-2 just seems overkill.
Feel free to add one or two free programs for on-demand scans, and perhaps a URL scanner.
If you want to spend money I recommend a good imaging setup. ;)

Good imaging needn't cost a penny.
Apart from the free options such as Driveimage XML and Macrium Reflect, both of which will do the job perfectly well;if you have a Seagate drive there's the free Diskwizard (Acronis based),Maxtor offer the same thing named as Maxblast. Also a quick spin on google reveals that there are free promotions for Paragon Hard Disk Manager 9.5 SE,which contains a comprehensive imaging solution (incremental & differential backup options).;)

KIS + Prevx + a-squared free + MBAM + SAS as on demand scanners.
Paragon products ( free or paid ) have always functioned perfectly for me.

'Good imaging needn't cost a penny'

That depends on what you want. I prefer to store images on an external harddrive, safer than on a hidden partition or something like that.
I also like the bootable CD (made by Acronis) to restore an image. (Acronis version 8 ).
My Acronis software was also worth the money, IMO.

I happen to think that AcronisTI is a very good utility,I was merely pointing out that you don't have to pay to get good results; personal preference is always the deciding factor.

I use the free version of Macrium Reflect which allows imaging to my external usb drive and allows the creation of a Linux boot cd (or BartPE plugin).I've never experienced a bad image with it,it is quick and has a good compression level.Pretty much the only limiting factors are that it doesn't allow for differential imaging or bare metal restoration.
