Extreemely Slow Image Backup

I have searched thru the knowledge base and the forums to see if there are others and/or a solution. Found one entry from support that talked about checking the IDE channel for transfer mode. It does say use DMA when available, however, the current transfer mode box says Not Applicable.

I started the initial image backup 20 hours ago. HD is 195 GB, with 120 GB used and 61.2 free. As of now the task log says it is 36% complete. The progress bar shows 1 of 3 operations and remaining time 1 day 12 hours.

I am backing up to a new 1 TB external drive over our home network. The external drive is attached to another older workstation that has a wireless USB netword adapter.

Just do not know what else I can do to improve backup time. I have it set to do an incremental with a new full backup every 7 days. However, at this rate, don't see how even the incremental is going to be able to run if the initial full is not done.

I purchased the upgrade for the sole purpose of being able to backup with the disk image instead of file based backup. If this cannot be resolved then I might as well go back to doing that with a free program.

That's really slow. TI should be able to create an image archive at a rate of ~1 GB/min to an external USB2 hard disk or ~3 GB/min to a fast internal SATA drive. If you had your 1 TB disk attached to the PC it should take somewhat less than 2 hours to back up a 120 GB partition.

If it's really going to take 56 hours to complete, your data transfer rate is on the order of 5 Mbits/sec across the network. That is not out of the question if a wireless link is involved. Is there any way to connect the workstation to the network via Ethernet cable? 100 Mb/s wired Ethernet should go at least 10 times faster than what you're now seeing. I typically can achieve ~2 GB/min across a Gigabit wired LAN to a Linux machine acting as a file server.

Have you measured the time it takes to copy a large file across the network to the 1 TB drive? Is it consistent with the 5 Mb/s that you're seeing with TI?

Just so I'm clear on what you are doing. Your image is going over a wireless network to another computer and being stored on an external HD attached to that computer. Correct?

After you have completed your image, could you copy about 1 GB of MP3s from your computer to the external HD and measure the time in seconds so you can work out the transfer rate in MB/sec?

 

Just defragment and error check all the drives. This would reduce the backup time.

Are you using Kaspersky Internet security?

 

How is the 1tb drive foramtted? NTFS or FAT?

k0lo is right, I would also recommend you to connect you computers via Ethernet. It will work much faster.

In addition to this I advise you to decrease the level of compression and increase the priority of backup process.

Couple of things:

1. Anti Virus and/or firewall software will slow you down.

2. direct cable connection as mentioned above would be faster.

3. Direct connection of the 1TB hard drive inside the computer being backed up
would speed things up dramatically.

4. Make sure the 1TB drive is formatted as NTFS.

I can backup approximately 45gb to an internal 1TB drive in about 18 minutes or less.
