Differences in program components between online update and new release

    Hallo,

My system is configured to update and install program components of ESS automatically. My question is: Is my system at the same status like the newest release ?

For example the version 4.0.437 is the newest version. I have installed version 4.0.424 with current updates. Are there differences between my installation and the new version ?

Are there only differences in the install / uninstall routines but no differences in the program version on my pc ?

That whole update components setup (PCU) bit during the installation of ESS is something of a farce. That's one of the things that's always kinda bugged me about ESS. They don't update the version or build of the software that you have installed. They do update certain modules/components as they become available.

In other words, if you have ESS 4.0.417 currently installed on your system you would have to manually download the newest 4.0.437 build and install that yourself, either buy installing right over the top of what you already have or uninstalling your current build, doing some minor clean up then installing the latest build.

You can also check changelog to see actual differences. Like Darrren said, you can update program modules automatically but you need to manually download and install next iteration (e.g. from 424 ->437)

    Thanks for your answers,

so in other words: The online updates don't upgrade the components of my current installation always to the newest release.

    Why not ?

ESET v4 (and v2/v3) are able to upgrade to full version with PCU's, they just didn't released one yet for both v3 and v4 (in v2 they did once or twice a year). You can try a search on the forum if you want to know more about the reasons why not.

I believe I have seen a post a few days ago that a PCU for v3 users will be released.

A program component update to the latest v3 (in particular, 3.0.684) has already been distributed via automatic update to a portion of v3 users and the rest of v3 users will receive it soon. This build has proven to be perfectly stable on all system configurations and we haven't been reported any serious issues during the several-month period of use. Even though v4 works for the vast majority of our users fine, there are still certain configurations when it may cause problems. To my best knowledge, all these issues have been already resolved, but need more time for internal testing before they are included in public installers.

The official ESET policy remains to be one where new users are delivered the newest version so they can test it. This group is smaller than the rest of us and thus a smaller problem for ESET to handle. If they released the newest stuff to all of us, all hell would break loose for them in support calls. This way, they keep their support costs down. Current users are wise to wait until they release a stable version as Marcos has just indicated. I still think this is no way to run support, having been a manager of support for about 20 years - now gladly retired! If you are running a clean version, don't change it as it always is true that "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" Cheers

    Hello,

As mentioned in this message, ESET's software is architected in a manner which is a little bit different than what most people are familiar with--a type of framework with modular plugins. As a result, ESET is often able to update its software in situ to fix problems or add features simply by sending out updates to the modules, instead of like some other products which may need to be completely reinstalled to make changes on the same scale.

If this is really true, then it should follow that my version 3.0.650 has been updated with these so that I am now current to version 3.0.684.

    Is this true or noto_O

If not [as I suspect] then what is different and bettero_O

    Thanks. Jim

    Hello,

You can confirm the build of ESET NOD32 Antivirus v3 you are currently running by right clicking on the ESET NOD32 Antivirus tray icon, and then clicking 'About'.

If version v3.0.650.0 is working for you, you don't have to upgrade. However, if you having a problem that has a documented fix in a latter build or if you are having stability or performance issues, you may want to consider upgrading to v3.0.684.0 here.

    Regards,

    Mark.

Thanks, but that does not address my question as well as I would like.

First of all, I am running 3.0.650.

My point is that the mod suggests that as "modules" are added/changed, the result is my local software should be about the same or exactly the same as the current 3.x build. Or at least as good as the current 3.x build. I expect that this is not exactly correct. The main problem seems to be one of communication by ESET in that I have yet to get a straight answer as to:

Why hasn't my version been "automatically updated/upgraded" to the latest that is being sold to new users?

How am I to know/trust that my version has everything new that I need?

I don't have any problems with how my version is working as nothing "bad" has happened with my "stuff" - yet I wonder if I could benefit from anything in the latest build. HOWEVER, I have been warned several times via this forum to stay with my current build until ESET gets the bugs out. It has been about 1 1/2 years so far!! I am loosing faith.

I have also seen the post that says that the latest 3.x version will soon be sent out "automatically" to me and others - I am still waiting. In the meantime, version 4.x is up and I am wondering how many years it will be until the "automatic" distribution.

This does not work like all my other software and is not at all how we used to do the hundreds of "modules" that our software contained. So far, I feel that the description of how these are handled is all doubletalk.

ESET seems to have a problem with some users that needs to be better addressed. I remain in hopes it will be and soon.

    I have another suggestion.

Why can ESET not inform users with a tooltip, message or another kind of message in case of major program update is available ? This can be done after the signatures are updated via online updates. There is shown a message that the signatures have been updated. So there could be an additional message for the new version.

At the moment I have to check if there is a new version for my ESS available on the eset homepage.
