Problems with windows picture viewer alternatives

i have two problems with irfanview, and all alternatives of windows picture and fax replacements. These softwares tend to have lots of features and filters for image processing and organisation, but they dont have tools for easy image magnification like the one in windows picture viewer.
1)The magnifier works with entire image , unlike the windows image viewer which can be used to point and magnify the image. Is this possible in irfan view or any other image viewer.?
2)I need to diable full screen on double clicking the image .Is ther a way to that?
The windows image viewer seems to take lot of time to open certain jpeg files. Is there any way to solve the problem?

Use your mouse to select an area, then use the zoom option.
Full screen, don't know, have not explored this one, will check ...

As to windows image viewer issues, it's slow, plus check if your anti-virus or something interferes.

    Mrk

Select an area for "zoom", but then select "crop image". Just don't save it if you don't want it really changed.
