Vista SP2 and SSM

Hi there, wondering if anyone has an idea as to what may have happened here. System Safety Monitor has been working fine for a long time now on my Vista system, but last night I upgraded to SP2, and now no longer will SSM load it's driver. I have uninstalled it, and reinstalled it with no success. What could have changed in SP2 that prevents it from working now?

Yeah that is a shame in itself, but it did not mean the end of the last version's usefulness. I have found it to do it's job well up till now. I am wondering what has happened with SP2 for vista that has now stopped SSM from loading it's driver.

If I am unable to get it working again, does anyone have a suggestion for a decent HIPS that works well with Vista?

Yes, confirmed here also with Vista SP2.

 

There is actually only no English version, that's all.
There is an offical site and a forum in Chinese.
And I've read that they are working on new EQSecure (4.2) with an English version and this one will be released anytime around beginning of July.

Yep Rickster, that is the situation I am in. Have not been able to rectify it yet. Do you have any idea why it is happening?

 

As you say it's very much a niche market and a lot of the products that have ceased development were small projects fronted by a single programmer.In these grim times we all gotta eat.

 

The simple truth is that casual home users are not up to it! They don't have the knowledge such tools require for them, and most of them also don't have the time to waste with them.

Do you really believe that X person that just came out of her/his work, went to get her/his kids at school, get home, help them with school work, prepare them a snack, tired like crap, will have the mind to go to her/his computer, connect to the Internet, and get prompts and more prompts from a classical HIPS?

Not a chance.

Most security vendors are aware of that, and they offer "smarter HIPS". Some also include a massive whitelisting, which should always be growing.

The day they all start to implement classical HIPS, well... those users will remember this HIPS as Hyper Insensitive Political S***.

This people (I must say I also like the method), are better of with systems, where actions are restricted by using limited user accounts, software restriction policies (I'd like to see Microsoft making it possible for smaller Windows versions! Its a matter of security, actually!), safe practices.

If we join all that, you can't be wrong.

 

well since I have lost SSM due to SP2 of Vista, I am now trialing Malware defender. So far quite impressed. I currently run KIS 2009, which obviously has a firewall. Should I just turn off the Network protection side of MD, or should I leave it running? Maybe a question for another thread.
