Just an FYI, been using that free version (7.2.5) for some time and it work's fine on Vista here; doesn't even need to be in compatability mode. Just checked the version and made a capture to be sure.

SnagIt looks very similar to Snipping Tool on Windows 7 i think, I am not sure if it is also in Windows Vista.
So IMO this software is mainly targeted for Windows 2000/XP users or maybe it has more features which simply i don't know.

I have also found lightscreen portable
there is a non portable version just search on google.
better than the one bultin to vista and win 7 because you can assign keys for different types of screencapture such as full screen, one window and custom (drag screen area)

Not in my book. I had this free version and finally dumped it for FastStone Capture. I have always found Capture simple to use and very intuitive. Not so with SnagIt...

    Hi Folks,

Thanks for the find. On my earlier puter I had an earlier version where the freebie was listed on the Mark Liron (Microsoft-MVP) site.

Snag-It does this occasionally, which is very fine .. a full, free, stable feature-rich, reasonably up-to-date version. (With discount to upgrade.)

The screen capture programs have pluses and minuses. Snag-it's pluses are thought of in terms of image manipulation and techie stuff. However I think Snag-It is one of the stronger screen capture programs for "text capture" -- a complicated area than can be Windows API and/or OCR and one that can come up in many ways (Evernote is used for some of that too, travelling into the cloud and back, some programs like HyperSnap capture only some Windows API stuff, which is still helpful, many programs capture nothing of text). Thus Snag-it would have a place on my puter even if I use WinSnap or Jing or something else for basic simple capture. Also "annotation" of screen shot is another area where many screen captures are weak. Although you can work around that with a sticky program like NoteZilla or StickyNotes.

Thus I definitely do the Snag-it download, even if it is auxiliary, not my everyday capture program.

    Shalom,
    Steven Avery
