Thank you for the quick response. I have replaced the appropriate files on the two servers and will post a follow up next week with results.

I just started getting this error (sector 63) on my external UPS drive (Wb MyBook 500 GB). Reading this thread I would guess that it happened because the system was booted without the drive attached and the drive subsequently added.

When I first got the error I tried chkdsk /r, to no avail. I tried running a backup task whose target as on that drive, and after I clicked "ignore all" to the sector errors, the backup succeeded.

Finally after reading this thread I tried rebooting with the drive attached, and this and only this made the errors go away.

Is there a SnapAPI update for me? I am using TIH 2009 build 9709.

I have repeated the experiment with consistent results. If the USB drive is not connected when the system is booted then TIH 2009 will report Sector 63 errors. These errors go away when the system is rebooted with the USB drive attached.

    This is clearly a bug.

I have recently come to the conclusion that this error message maybe more generic than specific.

I installed W7 RC1 (clean install, beta was wiped) installed TI 2009 9709 and then attempted to mount various working images that had been made in XP pro SP3. I got the Sector 63 error on my external drive. Rebooted back to XP same version of TI read it no problem.

After suffering the Vista/W7 loss of being able to open control panel and a few other links causing BSOD's I re-installed both W7 and TI and it has worked OK since.

Obviously there is no problem with the external drive, chkdsk /r found nothing, so I suspect that it is a TI driver problem (which might also cause the Vista/W7 loss of control panel access, apparently many programs can cause this not least nVidia video drivers, which I also use), and like some of the other Acronis error messages, they don't always point to what the actual problem is from a verbose point of view.

    Hi,

Same issue here. I'm glad I found others with the same issue - I thought I was going mad!

Acronis, could you please send me the snapAPI file also to see if it corrects the issue on our systems?

    Acronis®*True*Image*for*SBS® with Acronis Universal Restore® (build*8,206)
    SBS 2008 Standard x64 SP1
2x External USB Freecom 320GB Tough Drive Pro.

    Many thanks.

Unfortunately for some of us the snap driver updates do not work.
I would like to propose a work around which, while still painful, does not require you to be present to click Ignore nor reboot the server with the USB drive attached so automatic backups can be made.

If anyone has any better suggestions please let us know as I for one would like to make this a bit easier.

Have a second PC with the USB drive attached and share the drive with access for everyone.
On the server map a drive to the share on this PC.
Schedule the backups to the drive via the map.

Unfortunately on swapping the USB drives, although the drive letter remains the same and the share seems to still exist neither the mapped drive nor the UNC path to the share works any more, so I have found that I need to re-create the share AND the mapped drive each morning.

But this does mean that the automatic backup does work at night with me at home doing something interesting.

    Regards

This is not just SBS. This happens with the most recent TI Echo Workstation upgrade. Couldn't for the life of me figure it out until I caught your post.

I went back to acronis TI echo 8.163 and the error is gone.

My problem was recognizing an eSata drive over 500 GB, When I went back to 8.163 both Disk Director and Echo recognize the drive as NTSF.

    It is an Acronis problem

Following my own advice regarding mapped drives has another drawback.
It takes so long it is not practical for the amount of data I am backing up.

I was told a while back that this was caused by the USB drives not having an MBR but I have tried setting this with DISKPART and this seemed to work but only for a day then back to the old error again.

This is so annoying as the Acronis guys know there are a lot of us with this problem and they could provide a patch to enable us to optionally ignore these errors and this would be definite not as now with a driver fix that sometimes works and othertimes not.
At least we could continue without waiting for a full fix some time this summer which was when I was told a fix may be available.

The way I work this now is to remote desktop into my server via VPN and manually start off the 2 backups I need (I need two because of other bugs with VSS, thanks again Acronis) at 7pm and then 9pm.

Just a quick one, I think I found a download link to the snapapi driver in this post

Can anyone confirm this is the correct driver?

    Thanks.

And again til today no answers from Acronis. We are selling 3-4 TI Server each month but we are now looking for a replacement of Acronis because of that bad support strategy. Over days no answer. Rebooting all of our customers servers every night. It's unbelievable. It looks like Acronis is only interested in selling, selling and selling. How many replys in this thread you need to wake up o_O Regards Hans-Dietmar

    Hello all,

Thank you for using Acronis Corporate Products

About the mentioned "Failed to read from sector 63" error message.

Our developers are working to create a fix. Today we have a workaround on how to solve this issue for all programs in English language except Acronis True Image Home 2009 and Acronis True Image Echo Workstation (a fix for these versions will be available soon). To provide with a reliable solution I need to know the exact title of the program you use and the build number.

I am sending the necessary instructions and the necessary files to all who pointed out the exact version beginning from my last reply dated 07/05/2009.

By the way, if you need an emergency help from us, you can get the access to Acronis Advantage — Support options here

Also, our resellers can receive an immediate support via Acronis Partner Portal available here

    Thank you.

We're also experiencing the 'sector 63' error.

We use Acronis True Image Echo Server with Acronis Universal Restore (Build 8203).

    Please PM promptly.

I have seen this error a few times. I am convinced that it Acronis that is the problem.

I can put a drive in a internal hard disk caddy and it all works fine. But if I put the same drive in a USB caddy Acronis says that there is a Sector 63 Error.

This is not really a surprise with Acronis's track record on builds for ATI 2009.

I think the real problem is that the Acronis error messages are in cases like this one very generalised. I can force the above error message to appear with some USB drives by making sure they are full and can't perform a consolidation, manually deleting an incremental when it needs to consolidate and not having the drive available when an image is scheduled.

The USB drives I can get to error are ones that are listed in the boot sector as removable - my other drives don't list themselves as removable (though they are).

If the error messages were more accurate, it might be easier to make a judgement.

Yes BODGY, I am sure that you are correct. Thinking about all the various times that I have seen this error message, this would explain things.
