What kind of info. do you think they can collect from this? Hopefully not something like credit card numbers.

 

Yes they do collect but I doubt that card numbers are their primary target, so I assume you don´t have to worry about that. I think they try to profile everything they can get to use it against people and for their own benefit. Also economic espionage, cyberwar, global surveillance and so on. Basically we have three parts, those who know about and look into it, those who are part of it and the last part is the hugest those who even don´t know that they exist.

Just installed Outpost Firewall Pro 2009 ver. 6.5.4 (2525.381.0687) on Windows 7...

Works fine.. Just that Action Center Cant see it.. So it reports Firewall is not installed.

 

I m wondering if the combo of
OP Firewall Pro + NOD32 2.7
is better than
OP Security Suite ?

 

Just a reminder to check your setups against the product specs before proceeding to install. Note that OP free specs indicate support for W2K but no mention of 64 bit.

 

ADSL might be different but if you use cable, the network speed depends more on when do you test it. If the cable traffic is heavy in you area, the throughput for you can dropped greatly. Also the service you just used might affect you test with RR. After stop torrent, I found my speed keeps low in at least 10 minutes.

A better way available for home user to tell the difference might be to test in LAN with a ftp server. BUT, I would not bother it because I believe the difference should not matter more than footprint, software conflict, torrent performance, system starting time, frequency of popup after 1 week' learning.

On my P4 2.4G system I have to gave up the ZA and OP Trial 3 years ago because the starting time seems long, I am wonder if the new OP free is fast on start up and if some one found it conflict with KAV2009?

 

There is a problem when changing default settings of winlogon, svchost, werfault. This should be prevented from the developers otherwise it is not more possible to log into windows. Everyone can change these settings e.g. injection prevention by re-setting the defaults of winlogon and svchost this results in a inability to login. Last chance is safe mode to uninstall outpost. Occured on Vista 64 Bit SP2.

 

IMHO, 99.9% of retail users should NOT mess with settings at these levels.

But I'm curious to know what your planned changes were and the rationale for them.

Yes - just have to right click on the firewall icon to get the block all option.

Agnitum recently [April, 2009] released a free version of the Outpost firewall intended for personal home use only. It is a functionally equivalent but limited Outpost Pro version that includes a two way firewall with automatic rules creation, host protection, self protection and blocked traffic only shown in the log viewer. Compared to the pro version it does not include spyware protection, attack detection, web advertisement and active content blocking, identity protection, an advanced log viewer, update functionality and no technical support by Agnitum. Hips has nothing to do with the firewall component.

Outpost has better packet filtering, better logging abilities, less hardcoded firewall rules; Outpost pro/security actually protects from spoofing attacks (where comodo fails miserably) and offer an easier module to maintain blacklisted IPs.

I was one of the members in the comodo forums when there where only 200 members. And I was one of the initial team of volunteers moderators.
So you can rest assured that these issues were already reported directly to Melih and Egemen, even back with version 2.4, 3.0, 3.1,... Issues that were never adressed or fixed...

I have no interest, whatsoever, in entering in a dialog of 'x product is better than y' or listing all their differences, advantages and disadvantages. I only answered to your question.

As an advise I'll say that the best protection for a user is the one that he can comprehend. Use the one you feel comfortable with and common sense (never make the mistake to think that is invulnerable to attacks).
