Heya guys, I use to use Nod32 back during the v2-v3 days and liked it, then decided to try out Kaspersky Internet Security when the subscription ran out and have been using that for a while aswell. Decided I want to go back to Nod32 as it seemed to do the job much cleaner.

So now Im trying to decide between Nod32 Antivirus or the new (to me atleast) smart security.

I dont use outlook on that machine, just web mail if any, and my network only has my computers on it, and its behind a Statefull packet Inspection router/firewall. Do you think its wise to get Smart Security over normal Nod32 Antivirus or would it really just be additional stuff to potentially interfere/slow down the system?

I was really just looking for an anti virus, but now im not sure. You guys have any opinions?

On a side not, does anyone know if Nod32 can do program updates now as apposed to just signature database updates?

    Thanks guys.

I would recommend testing Smart Security using the free trial.
No, program updates are not currently available.

As far as i understand the difference between nod32 and ess is the firewall and the Antispam. To me it sounds like you really don't need any of them since you use webmail and already have a hardware firewall. You didn't say what OS you use, but both Windows XP and Vista have a build-in firewall in addition to your hardware firewall. The Vista firewall is more advanced with more features compared to the XP firewall.
I use Windows Vista, the windows firewall, nod32 and also have a hardware firewall and never really had any issues with spam, virus, break-in to my system or any other such known issues. So i find nod32 to work just fine for me. I never used ESS so cannot say much about how well it works, but according to what i read i got the impression that ESS contains more bugs which i guess is obvious since it contains more features. I believe ESS and nod32 are the same with the same code except that ESS contains the antispam and firewall module in addition to the antivirus/antispyware. So the antivirus/antispyware modules should work the same for both products.

Whatever you decide i would suggest to download and use the trial for a couple of weeks to try out the product before you decide to buy any of them. Especially if you choose ESS if i'm right about more bugs/issues with ESS.

I prefer the stand-alone antivirus solution since I don't like suite software including third party firewalls, but that's just me.

Entirely up to you and the depth of knowledge of said software and willingness to tweak it to make it work best for your needs.

Whichever, ESET keeps on making excellent software :thumb:

this is what trials were made for - to try the product before you buy...

Zaskar I'd go with just the Av if you have the router.

Yes it is just you, since it's not a 3rd party firewall.

I also prefer dedicated (standalone) AV + dedicated Firewall, as there is no the best all-in-one solution. I use NOD32 + Comodo firewall (free).

We use the AV client + stateful firewall. We have other components to do antispam and didn't the firewall since we had a physical one in place.

So, if one has ESS and after a while he decides to use only AV component and not to use FW from the suite, is it possible to disable the FW of the suite and use some other FW product(OA, OP, etc.) ?
Will they coexist without any problems(ESS with disabled FW and Av only and other FW)?

Problem with installing the drivers for ESS is that they could interfere with drivers of other firewalls or other anti-virus programs... thus it is best to just install the AV rather than the suite if that is your choice...

This is another reason why folks like to check around and determine what they prefer for the different components before settling for a suite... There are several that run ESET AV as a stand-alone product and then run a different firewall... No offense meant to ESET, but there are better firewalls available...

Another reason I like different pieces from different companies is that the patterns used by one company might carry over to both products and thus if something slipped by one, odds are it would slip by the other... This is not true in all cases, but something I tend to keep in the back of my mind...

Still... if you did purchase ESS... then during the installation process you would need to select only to install one piece of it rather than the full suite and disabling part of it...

But then... why buy the whole suite and not use it ? Better just to purchase the AV in my opinion... but that is just me...

    Hi Bob,

All above mentioned with choosing the appropriate AV and then preferable FW is well known to me. But thanks anyway for explaining so wide.

Well i was interested to see if this could be done.
Someone can buy ESS and after six months can go for an different Fw.
I know that, why to buy ESS, when only you can buy only the AV. But what if someone has the whole suite and at some point choose for the question i made.
So, it's possible if during installation can be select only Av to be installed(if the ESS is installed again and not to install full suite and then to disable component as you suggested ) and pair it with different Fw, so they should would just fine?

About drivers you mentioned with ESS, if only AV is selected during install, can the they pose an problem later or make instability?

License is valid for both ESS and NOD32, so if you don't like/need ESS, just uninstall it and install NOD32 (and vice versa). Been there, done that. As simple as that!

When installing ESS, if you are careful to select installation of the AV only, there is a good chance you would be ok... but it is better just to install the single AV package and thus no chance that the ESS firewall drivers would be installed to cause any problems...

You're right that you can go from ESS to NOD32 if you have bought ESS-license but you can't go vice versa!

You'll have to pay extra if you want ESS with your NOD32 license.
