    Hi Folks,

Normally I would like to compare this with Backup4All and maybe a couple of other backup programs (Genie, SyncbackSE, SEBackup). Not many have a full-fledged freeware so you likely would fare pretty well on the functional evaluation, at least in the freeware comparison. Clearly Comodo has always been considered a reasonable product technically in the firewall and backup realms (some other areas may be a spot uneven) and it looks like you have added some niceties above.

Josh, can you share with us the Comodo intentions in regard to possible toolbar and other extraneous install stuff that might end up in the next release version of Comodo Backup ? Post-Beta. Please note: I may not want to get involved in an evaluation, especially if you may do an "opt-out" type of toolbar implementation in the actual release. Or anything that is opt-out that is extraneous to the actual backup program (like a community doohickey).

And please share with us whether any shareware and download companies who are concerned with such issues (e.g. who label such an implementation 'adware' .. consistent with their own standards and definitions and common sense) may end up with a "cease-and-desist" letter from your legal beagles ?

Josh, I realize that you might not have many answers to these questions ("we will see") however there is a simple old adage .. once burned, twice shy .. and if such simple questions cannot be answered, then I will similarly pass on Comodo backup, and wait and see.

    Thanks.

I am SO SICK OF PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT TOOLBARS!!!

You want a free, updated and developed product, that fares as well as the paid competition, and if they so much as try to make a penny by a toolbar you can bloody opt out of you have a pissy fit?!?!?!!

what retards. If cheapskates like you actually supported the software with money they would not have to do it.

    Makes me so angry!

    Hi Folks,

Actually that is what I did when I bought Backup4All - I think it was a Bits Du Jour special. Yep, I like buying good programs and companies that don't try to trick people.

Another company to consider, with the companies mentioned above, is Cobian, with a freeware backup tool. Not only do you avoid toolbar trickery and CEO Clintonesqe semantic games, you even get a similar-sounding company name.

If other folks are familiar with the open source group (Amanda, Zamanda, Bacula, NasBackup) -- are they sensible for single user home use, or more for enterprise ?

    Shalom,

COMODO Backup - who cares ?

    Hi Folks,

Even yesterday the clueless Melih-Comodo team continued to try the bully-intimidation route, again trying the lawyer attack dogs.

    http://news.softpedia.com/news/Comodo-Is-Not-Done-110905.shtml
    Comodo Is Not Done
On May 5th Softpedia received another official email from Comodo
"Yesterday we received yet another email from the Comodo PR team ... we received a follow-up ending as the first cease and desist did: with a warning of redress."

Congrats, Comodo. It is difficult to make Softpedia look real good, and this you have accomplished.

    Bye, Comodo.

There will be NO toolbar in Comodo Backup! This v2 has also many functionality of programs such as Acronis True Image, Paragon Drive Backup. It's a real over usability overhaul compared to v1 with many new features.

Oh, and about the transparent GUI issues (Eg "floating buttons, etc) will be fixed in future releases. This IS first beta/first version since a year, So you can expect more features as well before the final release of v2.

You can say this also like a Time Machine and a Ghost Program, By the way a rescue CD will be in the future for Comodo Backup (Example, you can't boot - Get the CD and restore). Off topic: Both Comodo Time Machine & Comodo Ghost will be out later... Time Machine will be in CIS v4. :)

Thanks guys and let me know if you have any issues (Bug related, please post at the forum) - Developers are watching the Backup Board and are responding.

I will not comment on Softpedia.

    Cheers,
    Josh

I like it when clueless people rant, makes it fun for me at 4am:D Let's just shut this down step by step, shall we?

    1. You don't like complaints about toolbars: Too bad, so sad. They DON'T belong in security products. Norton caught 10 kinds of hell, Comodo's catching it too. Furthermore, they used !ASK, widely known for using some of the shadiest tactics in history. Whether they still do is of no matter, reputation sticks with you.

    2. You think if we all threw money at them, they wouldn't do it: WRONG, WRONG, WRONG. What you utterly fail to comprehend is that advertising revenue can reach into the millions of dollars, Comodo doesn't have NEAR the amount of users to reach that amount of money even if each and every one of us tossed our money at them like they were strippers on a pole. Furthermore, not sure if you're noticing or not, but the economy is shot, people aren't working, they sometimes can't afford food, and you expect them to toss what little they have at a software developer. Next up, they HAVE money coming in from selling security certificates, and they have a PRO version of Comodo for purchase. Whether that isn't enough money or not isn't us "cheapskates'" fault, so hop down from your little high horse.

What you also aren't seeing is a big percentage of the hate towards Comodo right now is because of the way their numbskull CEO is acting, throwing lawyers at people and spamming his own boards with nonsense over the frigging definition of a word.

    3. All of the above makes you very angry: May I suggest a teddy bear and a hug?

I'm through with you now, have a good day.

There's a very good reason the competition isn't worried, and that's because the only thing Comodo has been successful at so far is propaganda.

Can't elevate your product beyond the "crappy" status? No problem, just launch a brainwashing campaign to trick unsuspecting users into thinking you're great.

OK. This will sound like a cliché coming from me already a few times, but, well, I think its time for it. :D

I opened this thread about X product from Y company. I then see people complaining about W toolbar from Z company. Then, other deviations related to it. When enough is enough?

To put it simple for you people to understand - If you like it, use it. If you don't like it, don't use it.

I won't be repeating myself about the toolbar, as my views were expressed at the appropriate thread.

Now, talking about this product. I won't even be trying any COMODO products anymore. I no longer have the confidence, since the moment I was told that an issue with Defense+, blocking access to my own system, wasn't in their top priority to check. Fine by me. I got the support I paid for.

And, this only reflect my personal view, I believe that when someone tries to do so many things at the same time, the end result won't be that great. I know it from the time I used to use COMODO products. Nowdays, in none of my systems people will see them. I've had enough. Issues and more issues, and none being fixed, because weren't considered important.

As I said, that's fine by me, but, when I see at COMODO forum that a damn purple dot in CIS user interface was a top priority and promptdly solved, I lost my confidence in COMODO even more.

That said, all the best to every COMODO user and COMODO.

Comments like yours only reveal one thing - You use COMODO products because they're free. If they were paid you wouldn't use them I guess, and you'd be bashing COMODO.

I wonder how many of the COMODO supporters actually use their paid CIS and make use of the toolbar, so that COMODO gets more revenue. (This is a rhetorical question and needs no answer.)

My post wasn't even directed at you, unless you were the one that posted the nonsense I referred to under another nickname, then you had it coming. If you weren't that person, let me break down the nonsense you just posted too since I'm in a "shutting down" mood.

    1. Comodo 4 may be the end of security products: Um, no, but we all can dream, right? :) Technology is used by both the good and bad guys, when it advances, so do they. You say Comodo 4, Sandboxie, and *laughs to self*, virustotal.com is all we're going to need.......WRONG. Sandboxie has been penetrated before and will again, Comodo doesn't catch everything, and, lol, uh, virustotal, well, I guess if you want to stick to 10Mb files you go for it.

    2. Other security vendors should throw in the towel: Yeah, they should just take their ball and go home, so when Comodo completely f**ks up and something bad is let through, there's nothing else there to stop it (leaving out the LUA argument and such)...good idea there buddy boy. Oh, and let's not forget when nothing but Comodo is left standing, goodbye free version, hello "we'll charge whatever we damn well please"-PRO version.....once again, you're a genius.

They're already evidently "hard up" for money since they decided it would be a wonderful idea to stick a toolbar in a security product from a shady company, and, since that's going about as well as a porcupine in a nudist cafeteria, they're going to put a "social bar" in instead so we can find more "gee whiz that's awesome!"-websites....in a security product. If you're a fanboy and you know it, clap your hands *waits for you to start clapping*.

What's going to happen when the toolbars, social bars, and whatever else Melih hatches in his skull all fail and the security certificates and PRO purchases aren't enough? *waves farewell to Comodo*. Ok, finished with you now....Next!

Comodo’s stated aim is to “provide ... the products [the users] will need, for free, [and] gain ... trust so that we can be a big brand and this will help our other services”. This is a fine marketing plan, and Comodo will be hoping their backup application will help gain this trust and lead to them selling more Digital Certificates, their core business.

The problem is that Comodo are evidently not doing so well at selling their Digital Certificates else they wouldn’t be trying to leverage their free products in this way. The financial crisis must be hurting with investors nervously watching losses mount – Comodo’s ongoing expenditure in just these free products must be significant.

Reading the legal letters that Comodo are sending Softpedia reminds me of the SCO fiasco before they filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Lol, ssj100, you're just going to have to stick around and watch Comodo implode in on itself :D While my post is pretty sarcastic, read around that at the points I've made. They aren't REALLY that far-fetched, are they?

Well this is all interesting. Not going to get into the Comodo debate, and in my mind there is no doubt the security products are fine, but serious backup is a horse of a different color.

But the swiss army knife makes me a bit nervous. Doing a good job on backup/imaging isn't easy. Plus imaging/backup is the final fallback for me and it has to be totally reliable. This is one case where I'll stick with the proven leader.

Absolutely! For the life of me, I can't understand why vendors would want to roll them together in the first place, since most of us would be willing to pony up for them as separate products. And, anyway, it's rather like putting salt and pepper in the same shaker. Image backups are based on disk real estate, while file backups should be based on the file system. I am currently using TrueImage for imaging, but not for file backup, because the latter is quirky and will give you things like duplicated files with munged names when you do a restore. I use Titan Backup for file backups, and it is quite good, but for some reason, it doesn't drive purely from the file system. So, if you do a file restore after defragging or restoring an image, the backup program can't tell which files are unchanged, and replaces every friggin' file. You end up with a sound result, but it makes no sense to me.

You make a great point, none of us know when our favorite apps are going to close their doors, it happens all the time, especially when it involves companies that, like both Comodo and Sandboxie, have both free and paid versions, and, the free version works so well that you don't NEED the paid version. Those are the kinds of companies that are at risk, especially with the economy being what it is.

I'm glad Comodo works great for you, all of my negativeness is not a war-cry to get them shut down, it was because of their decisions and, Melihs skating around the real issue. Even people that are normally behind him 1000% took issue with him for concentrating on irrelevant definitions. I personally don't think mis-leading is a word that should have ever been used, I think it just boils down to toolbars and social bars being a bad move, and the handling of the situation by Melih only made people more upset.

All that being said, the issue has been beaten to death, and it doesn't look like things are going to change so far, so, I've probably said my final thoughts on it.
