New to 64 bit.

I am getting a new PC with 64 bit Vista. What free anti-virus programs work on on 64 bit Vista? Some of the sites aren't very specific. Also, do any of them at the moment take advantage of dual core processors?

We have been using AVG Antivirus Pro successfully for "yonks" on 64-bit systems. We can recommend the free version as well.

For free I suggest Avast home. Just plays better all round than the others.

avast! imo, but if you don't like it, then AVIRA.
Because avast! is the least crippled on 64-bit system. AVIRA dopesn't have any self protection on 64bit while avast! does. But detection is slightly better with AVIRA when it comes to raw detection.

 

Agree. Avast's detection is really high now, and it "just works" whereas when i used avira it messed with game protection.

 

Avira works well on my system.

 

Avast or Avira. If stability is you n.1 concern go with Avast. If you can't do without a web scanner go with Avast. If you want the highest detection possible go with Avira. If you want no false positives go with Avast.

I wish I had seen that before I installed Avira. I saw in Avast's forum that boot time scanning was not available in 64-bit mode. So, after running Avast for the last couple of years I gave Avira the nod this time.

Anyway, thanks everyone for the replies. Running Vista 64 with Avira PE, Prevx 3.0, DEP enabled for all programs, and as a standard user.

 

Avira works fine, so does Avast, just run under Limited user and enable full DEP, patch guard in x64 also protects you well.
