i noticed that someone has started a thread about antiviruses for linux, and many people have responded to it. i know linux is pretty much immune to viruses, but i also use windows and would like to protect my storage devices.
i have been able to download and use clam AV and avast, though it was not easy. i have also failed at using bitdefender, AVG, and FProt. i am a linux newbie.
are there any GOOD tutorials out there for installing and using these? i have found info on google, and i follow the instructions exactly. when i try to install, i either get "no such file or directory" or a picture of a lock, or no action at all.
    thanks in advance.

I think the installation process is a little different from a disto to another, but I'm assuming you'r using ubuntu, if so they have one of the great and helpful forums. you can search about whatever you want their and surely you will find it - that's what I used to do :D - this is the link www.ubuntuforums.org

But if you'r not a ubuntu user :doubt: tell us what linux distro you using, and the log details.... so we can help

    murtadh,
i just logged in and haven't checked out the info you've provided yet, but i will.
i have several hard drives, each with a different distro that i installed myself. installing each particular distro can be a learning experience, but i think that info can be found easier than the antivirus info. right now the distros i have on hard drive are ubuntu, linux mint, mepis, and open suse. each hard drive is labeled, so that i can use the distro that i am in the mood for. i must admit, though, that ubuntu has advantages over the others for many reasons.
i am a registered member at several different linux forums, including the one you speak of. these forums are all great.
i am going to be better organized in my efforts to install these antiviruses from now on. i need to keep a detailed log of the installation process, and where/how it goes wrong. being a newbie, it's probably my inexperience with the terminal that causes my problems.
thanks for the reply. i'll check out your link.

    just checked out the link.
i posted there just a few days ago. i asked if someone could help me with fprot and nobody ever replied. i know it's just a forum of volunteers. maybe nobody could answer my question. but yeah, i've been there. thanks.

    murtadh,
i tried the first link. this is the roadblock i encountered. i wasn't even able to execute the first command successfully.
i have enclosed a screenshot of the output from the terminal. i hope it came out ok. thanks.

the second link tells to download a deb file. when i go to fprot, there is no deb file available, so this must also be an old thread. i have already tried this. i ended up with an fprot file and an xfprot file in my home folder, neither of which i was unable to use.
the thread also pertains to feisty fawn. the version of ubuntu that i have been currently using is hardy heron, although that probably doesn't matter.
the only file available by fprot is a targz, and i am yet to defeat one of those.

the third link also refers to a targz file. it looks like that is where i am stuck at.
at least as far as fprot is concerned, a newbie has to know how to deal with a targz file.
    thanks for the replies.

    You can find build-essential here.

    http://packages.ubuntu.com/

For .tar.gz it shows the code to how to install the file.

    Code:
    cd ~/Desktop
    tar zxvf xfprot-1.20.tar.gz
    cd xfprot-1.20
    ./configure --with-sudo --autodetect --without-debug --with-install-dir=/usr/local
    make
    sudo checkinstall
You also might try "make install" without quotes, after the make command.

    kr4ey,
to begin with, the version of fprot that i have is 1.18, but i have compensated for that in the terminal. the info you provided says 1.20, so i switched the terminal command to 1.18. anyway, here is a screenshot to show what i have in my home folder.
is the home folder where the "active" file waits until it is used?

here is where i changed the version number, hoping for the best. i have a couple of other screenshots that i can present if needed. they either say "no such file or directory" or "error". i also did try

    make install

in place of checkinstall, to no avail.
there is also now a description-pak file that is on the desktop that was not there before, but there doesn't appear to be anything in it.
    thanks for the reply.

You need to change to your directory that has xfprot. Like this with cd command.

    cd /home/ed/xfprot-1.18.tar.gz

And than run the commands as root. It will not work thats why you get "no such file or directory" error. Because your trying to run the commands and its not in the right directory.

Check the contents of that folder and make sure there isn't another folder you may have to run something like this if there is another folder in the xfprot one. "cd /home/ed/xfprot-1.18.tar.gz/xfrot-1.18"

EDIT: You will have to use the the sudo command (root) since your xfprot folder is locked.

    sudo cd /home/ed/xfprot-1.18.tar.gz

"You need to change to your directory that has xfprot. Like this with cd command."

one of the reasons why i like IE. IE asks where you want downloads to go. i am not aware of this option in firefox. until i become more proficient, i would always choose to put downloads on the desktop.

"Check the contents of that folder and make sure there isn't another folder you may have to run something like this if there is another folder in the xfprot one."

what do you mean by "that" folder? I will assume you mean xfprot 1.18 (in the home directory) and give you a screenshot in the next reply.

A quick look at your screenshots tell me that you're messing your commands :-* I'll write you the exact instructions once I find time (probably tomorrow).

    sputnik,
i already have avast, but that's ok. for the sake of the thread and the tutorial purpose it may serve for other newbies, i appreciate it. being a deb file, i was somehow able to pull that one off. i admit though, there hasn't been one yet that i would call "easy", including clamav (somehow i have been able to use that one too). there are several that i have failed to use. fprot, avg, and bitdefender. after reading the other thread about all the AVs available to linux, i would like to install them all if i could.
thanks for the reply. hope to hear more from you.

Personally I would recommend avast! as the scanner of choice for the usage you described. It's detection capabilities are close to the Windows version and scanning speed it good.

ClamAV is only interesting for corporate usage (because of it's easy integration with mail servers, proxies etc). For desktop usage it's detection capabilities and scanning speed are too low.

Installing F-PROT Antivirus Linux Workstation on Ubuntu

    1) Download F-PROT Antivirus Linux Workstation: http://files.f-prot.com/files/unix-trial/fp-Linux-i686-ws.tar.gz
    2) Unpack "fp-Linux-i686-ws.tar.gz" using File Roller or using the context menu entry "Extract here".
    3) Open a terminal window.
    4) Navigate to the folder were you extracted "fp-Linux-i686-ws.tar.gz". For example:
    5) Use the installation script:

    sputnik,
    somehow you did it. :)
i decided to just start from scratch and use your link to download the file, which it did. then i extracted it with archive manager to the desktop. once i do that successfully, the rest goes without a hitch.
here i attached a screenshot to show you that i have it.
i scanned with it the same way you did, with the command-line terminal. i don't see any way to use it with a GUI. is there a way?
    thanks.
