I ditched NIS 2008 in favor of KIS 2009 just this week.
This week, Outpost has KIS 9 free after rebates.

I've recently used it's 15 day trial... and also the Norton 360 30 day trial when my Kaspersky Internet Security key expired.

I was going through a rough patch and couldn't afford to renew Kaspersky at the time.

I was very impressed with both Norton products and could tell why people were saying the new versions were much improved. I thought they were leaps and bounds better than what they used to be.

Having said that, I've been a Kaspersky guy through and through since late in the version 5 life cycle and renewed Kaspersky 2009 earlier this week.

To imply Norton is good for gaming and Avira is somehow not, is based on absolutely nothing in my view. I've used Avira whist online gaming with no lag what so ever, so I question why Norton is better for this?

To the OP, remember Norton is full security suite, so its going to have more features then Avira premium. You should sum up if you prefer separate programs, like you have currently or if you'd prefer an all in one suite that Norton IS offers.

    .
Good point - you get many features in addition to AV, AS and Firewall, such as anti-phishing toolbar, SafeWeb, Norton Vista UAC tool (separate downloads), Identity Safe (encrypted password storage and auto-logon ala roboform), etc. Regarding games, Norton offers a "full screen mode", meaning it suspends background tasks so it won't interfere with games running full screen. I haven't used Avira though, so I can't make a comparison Re game performance.

I haver NEVER renewed an AV, be it Norton or Kaspersky.
Such products are oft available for $0, or very low cost, after rebates.
Every time I see an offer, I stock up.

For my Windows 2000 system, I have enough KAV licenses to last until 2016.
For KIS 2009, I have 4 licenses, each 3-user, that I will use on my current Vista, and future XP, Vista and Windows 7 systems.

If one has more than 3 systems, then one usually has no such offers available, but you can buy Kaspersky relatively inexpensively at, say, Costco online, at least in the USA.

I haven't used Avira, so I can't comment on its capabilities. The going word here is its an excellent AV, I just prefer products that are big enough to get themselves on store shelves in the US (Kaspersky, Norton, etc.).

I've used Norton since the 2008 product came out, and Kaspersky before that. Norton is extremely good, and with 2009 its fantastic. Very good performance, and I like that fact that its very "hands off".

Like I said, I don't know the Avira product, I can only say from my experience Norton works very well.

Good to here all these opinions from many users. Any opinions on KIS 2009 VS NIS 2009? The problem is, NIS 2009 I'm getting for free so, I'm very tempted to try it out.

X vs Y debates are not allowed on wilders forums.

If your getting NIS 2009 for free, then you have nothing to lose giving it a try. When I tried Norton IS 2009 a while back I thought it was light on my system and it offers many features.

Ok, now it comes down to which offers better protection, my setup now? Or NIS 2009.

I think no one can answer that question definitively except YOU. Try each and make your own comparision and decision. You've had many responses based on people's experience but I don't see how anybody can predict the bottom line for you, your specific setup and constraints.

You could hypothetically continue listing detailed specifics about your hardware/software and usage profile and needs but you may be hitting diminishing returns on your issue unless you try some things out, feed back into this thread, and get people's thoughts on your feedback.

FWIW, I don't see any consensus that the answer to "NIS 2009 worth a shot?" is "no".

Pretty much covers it given the simplicity of the question.

Also, since this thread from the beginning tetered on the edge, it didn't take long for the same ole same ole to show up in regards to posts concerning everything other than the simple topic.

    Sure
