I have it installed on a Vista snapshot and it starts and runs just fine.

Inspired by the euphoric enthusiasm of contributors to this thread and being on the lookout for a possible viable Windows 9X alternatives, I've installed Twister 7.3 on 3 PCs of varying OS and performance just to see what happened.

Twister may have a small RAM footprint but compared to avast! 4.8 (my usual choice for an obselete OS) it slowed the 2 older machines considerably, especially at bootup.
Of particular interest is CPU use at idle, as indicated by 'Wintop', which is probably generally indicative.

98SE -- MediaGX/200MhZ 80MB --------- 1% ---------- 10%

95OSR2 - K6/500Mhz --- 320MB -------- 0.5% ---------- 3%

Resource management with XP/Vista may be better but I haven't tested.

The K6-2 machine would initially freeze almost every time during early after bootup and often during the Twister loading services/updating stage. Solved by turning off video "Hardware Acceleration".

 

I installed Twister in a Semprom using Windows 98 and it runs with no problem... (and detected a lot of malwares that NOD32 didn't).

 

are there any other AVAST services that are running beside asherv.exe?

Actually, you can't judge solely only from tests and resource usage.

I'm refering this especially for newer machines. Yes i know that you have tested on older ones.

You will have to use several Av's for couple of days (7-10 days) with different activities(surfing, downloading, uploading, online games, different browsers, multiple tabs open is browser) and then you can conclude what Av is light.

Light and good at least for you.
There can be always some hardware or software slowdowns, but i stress the software that is installed on the pc, it can make either conflicts, slowdowns or some different issues.
Although i haven't tested Twister extensively, i can say that is pretty light.

Yes, It uses some resources , especially on older machines, but from usage of resources to working with some particular AV is a great difference.

It's like some musician or someone knows about music. When he hears something is "bad" played or sing, that person can "see" the difference and can tell.
We ordinary people can't see the difference. At least i can't see it.

It's same with us PC users. When we use some different software, in this case Av, we can tell even the small difference. Little faster, or little slower goes the computer.

From Light to Good Av there is difference. So, is up to user to decide what he will use.

NOD is quite light, and everyone can tell you that.
Avast is performing differently for different users even with older machines.
As you can read from Comodo forum, what were they telling about BoClean, is that they are focusing on newer OS's. (XP and vista only), so they can optimize the program, because it consumes a lot of resources at this time.
The program has rewriten almost all the code.

So probably Twister is looking for the future, not the past.

As i can read for Av's for older machines, because i don't own that old machine or that old windows, i can agree that Avast is almost always recommended as light.

Remember Light and Good are two different terms.

 

It runs well for me too on the 1917mhz CPU, apart from at start & auto-updating during which the PC and mouse are barely responsive.

You are not wrong, but since it is possible to install only avast! Standard Shield service (ashserv.exe), which is the case in my first 2 examples, I've compared the impact of minimal installs. Twister's single service may well be providing extra protection.

 

Twister's service, includes the AV scanner, the registry monitor and FDDS (behaviour blocking module).

You may also want to disable from startup the Filseclab Messenger (FilMsg.exe or something).

And in any case, it is more advisable to use "CPU time" to judge CPU consumption, not CPU%.

 

What is the purpose of FilMsg.exe anyways, what does it do?

 

AFAIK, it displays pop-up balloon whenever an update is taking place. If you are ever doing a presentation, it really helps to not display this balloon so disabling is worth the trouble.

 

You can readily emasculate FilMsg.exe with Autoruns.

 

I'm using Twister AV atm and so far loving the experience I love the advanced heuristic features and it's even found some stuff that Avira missed so I am very happy.

I'm mainly using it as a HIPS + 2nd Opinion, but I'm sure I could even use it on it's own

Anyway, the good news is that they seem determined to go further in the AV industry. They have been "upgraded" to proper company.

The bad news is that from what he says, i doubt we will see v.8 in summer...

 

This doesn't hurt me at all, I want this version to be kickass and not some kind of unfinished beta causing BSODs

I agree with that. The current Twister is enough for my needs and i 'd hate a rushed version that will have problems. Still, thinking about the new version does make me feel impatient for its arrival.

The only thought that (i hope) there will be an improved FDDS makes me want to try it!
