I am looking for a program that will allow me to load mp3 files and play-lists onto my IPod, preferably drag and drop but if the files must be loaded into the program first that would be fine. Also would like to be able to view the files already on the IPod if possible so as to be able to remove those tracks I want to get rid of. Free would be nice but if the program works well I would be willing to pay for it.

    Just came across the following

---An iPod should play mp3 files, but it will sound like a 128kbps file because the iPod cannot process the mp3Pro compression.---

    Is this true?

I just don't know why people bother with iPods, I guess it's the masses flocking...

    1. foobar is a better quality media player for Windows, nothing can beat the sound quality, this is fact! iTunes is a joke...

    2. Get a better player that will allow you to simply drop music into the player like a storage device, or offers more flexibility...

    3. If you're a real audio buff then you should look into buying a Cowon player, they blow iPods away, also another fact.

Get educated don't follow the masses because it's the popular thing to do. :)

Also if you want to rip cds then get EAC or dbPoweramp.

Cowon: (S9 Is the beast to have right now!)
    http://www.cowonamerica.com/products/

    EAC: (Freeware)

    FLAC:
    http://flac.sourceforge.net/

    Foobar:
    http://www.foobar2000.org/

    dbPoweramp: (Shareware)
    http://www.dbpoweramp.com/

P.S. You make the move, you'll never look back. Also learn to rip FLAC, sheesh I don't know why people even bother with lossy, FLAC is the only way to go for sound quality, nothing beats it!

Well, since I already have a 160 gig IPod,,,and would like to continue using it since it still works well and I have 70 gigs of space on it,,,,the above is not especially helpful.

I did not ask for advice as to which player I should switch to, what I am looking for is something to replace Itunes, which is a pain to use. Also, is it the case that mp3 files do not play well on an IPod? If this is the case then I would want to use Apples format (as I believe I have done in the past, I say believe because it was 12,000 tracks ago when I loaded these onto the IPod and I have now listened to most of them - I created a play-list - and am not sure what format I used at the time).

I do have MediaMonkey but have not found a way to sync the files in my library with the IPod so that only new tracks are added to the IPod.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Hello,

I believe that iTunes is a requirement for syncing music, videos, photos etc onto your iPod. There may be a (illegit) (unofficial) way around this though.

    Regards,

    Mark.

Thank you very much, this is exactly the sort of thing I am looking for. Simple and to the point. I will have to reinstall iTunes in order to "enable disk use" but then I will be free of it forever (I hope).

Again thanks, you have made my day.

Because it's well-designed easy-to-use product? Ipod with Flash memory is very light and fits into almost any pocket easily.

I really love the way itunes manage library. Everything is easy and clear. I can't find another one that can manage my library like it does. Or maybe I'm just used to it. I don't even have an ipod.

MediaMonkey is the best Media player I have found so far + its the only one that will find every music file in my massive music folder, all others fail miserably when it comes to this task, and who wants to sit and add hundreds of files manually? Not me! + I recommended it to my sister for an alternative to iTunes, and she loves it, and said she wishes she had known about it months ago instead of dealing with all the BS in iTunes....

+ you can rip CDs with it, so you don't have to download and install different software to complete a few simple tasks, MediaMonkey does it all!

But as with switching to any other media player to sync music to your ipod, you must delete all of the music that is on your ipod and start out fresh, otherwise you will be dealing with doubles, and thats a pain in the..if you know what I mean!

I don't want to start a pissing comparaison contest here but I just want to let you know of mp3toys. I am using the latest beta build and it fits almost all my needs as for a music collection organizer. :)

I just turned in my Blackberry for an Iphone and it was a great move. I was wonderin' the exact same thing about itunes. I actually hate this app and I'm not that big a music man w/ earphones (prefer two channel stereo w/ tube amps of single ended triode design.. Ahhh Heaven) so music is second on my list. I use lotsa data though and an alternative to itunes would be great:

    PoddoX www.poddox.com

    SharePod http://www.getsharepod.com/

There are several other "FileManager" type apps.

+1 Yamipod, I've used it and it worked. But beware, you can lock your Ipod. Which means going back to square 1 with Itunes.

You can download songs from Ipod to PC and vice-versa. From what I remember it handles your playlists ok, also.

I recently came across this "file manager" that IMO is better than the rest I've tried:

when i use my shuffle which isn't often i use this python script, it stays on the shuffle and lets you drag and drop all the files you want. you just run the script at the end to rebuild the database -

songbird is supposed to be a good replacement, i've never used itunes though so i don't really know
