Just for everyones information, a legal letter has been sent to Softpedia. On the same subject, this toolbar has been analyzed by Kevin McAleavey (Comodo BOClean Developer) long last year... You can read the thread here. Kevin points out key points in this thread. I would encourage anyone who still doubts ask.com to read that thread, If you don't believe a word Kevin is saying, it's YOUR choice.

Also, A NEW Infrastructure will replace Ask toolbar!

It's called Comodo HopSurf - It's Social Authentication. More information can be read about it here.

I can also assure EVERYONE that this Comodo HopSurf toolbar is NOT Detected on:
    VirusTotal
    Jotti

I didn't read this entire thread, But I am just pointing out some resources and what is coming up to replace this toolbar. So any posts that are good, negative, or just arguments/debates to my post will unlikely be read by my self to reply too (Work is back full time)...

I will end my last post on here on wilders for a while. Thanks guys and if you need to contact me further feel free to send me a PM here or at the Comodo Forums... :)

P.S - Thanks Xan for pointing out the post about the AV Detecting Ask Toolbar, it was indeed a FP and fixed. :)

    Cheers,
    Josh

Are you guys at Comodo serious, or what? First you add in crap from a company with a history of doing some pretty shady things, now you decide since people are in an uproar over it, what, you're going to stick in some kind of social network (seemingly) bar into a SECURITY app? That pisses me off more than the Ask thing. Lol, you truly are becoming hilarious, yet sad, to me. Good luck with your products.

Let me give you a little history lesson.

What's the most common way virusses spread so easy these days (think about conficker) they use a buffer overflow attack.
Nobody had any defense against it against, yippy yey, another signature. So Comodo started developing a product that could defend you against 90% of all BO without the need of sigs. So Comodo Memory Firewall was born.

CFP went to CIS and in the 3.8 version they wanted to add buffer overflow prevention. But it wasn't so simple as they thought, so they used the easiest way to integrate it. Simply add it in a toolbar ! This will prevent all BO's coming from the browsers. Of course, they realised it wasn't enough. So they integrated it into defense+

So here's why the toolbar is there in the first place.

I must be honest, I don't read EULA's as well. But that was NOT what I was pointing to. I was pointing to the checks - unchecked boxes you have in the uninstaller.

If you think Comodo is now using a sneaky way to give you a toolbar, that's your choice, but I think it's just a bit overrated...

I would like to point out that it's more an online service instead of a toolbar.

    "What is hopsurf:

Its a way to "Watch Internet" (like you watch TV but now you can watch Internet)

Its a way to discover new and relevant sites on Internet (how can you find new funky stuff for yourself for your interest? Well now you can..) This also has the ability to auto surf and many other features as well as backend infrastructure for Social Authentication.

    Why launch Hopsurf:

Its because Every decision you make is an important authentication information. This helps Comodo Authenticate web content and make that available back to you! "

    Best regards

I will send you a pm about this. The reason I'm not posting this in the public, is because I think it's against the rules...:ninja:
edit : it seems I can't send it now. i'm getting this error : "The private messaging system is currently unavailable."

    Can I ask you what's funny ?

    Hi Folks,

Actually it is clear that Comodo went out of their way to be "sneakier" to the max.

Remember we had the pic here.
    https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showpost.php?p=1454992&postcount=3

    A) You can untick the one and only Ask.com reference in your agree area (which you will understandably assume clears you from Ask.com toolbar) yet you still get the toolbar from the SafeSurf reference.

    B) The SafeSurf reference surreptitiously puts in the Ask.com toolbar, a deception hidden in a EULA that likely less than 1% of install folks would normally read and note. SafeSurf of course sounds quite innocuous, and probably, you figure, is a one click-bypass .. not some "add-remove" hodge-podge.

Now we come to the worst part, unmentioned in the thread.

    C) The SafeSurf reference is itself bundled with :
"I agree to the above terms"
... the boilerplate acceptance of using a software product.

So (C) is incredible.. it is deliberately designed deceptively, to make you think that by unclicking the two options below and leaving the "acceptance" .. you are doing the de minimis necessary to receive the Comodo CIS. When in fact you can (and must, if you don't want to be encumbered with crapware) untick everything including "I agree to the above terms". Imho, this is a new and virtually unparalleled degree of installation deception. You can, and must, actually install without "agreeing" ! :) .

If integrity was involved, SafeSurf would have a totally separate checkmark from accepting the license. Even if opt-out. (CIS would still be adware but the deliberate deception would be lessened ... and if SafeSurf said "SafeSurf plus Ask Toolbar" then there would be no deception.) Cumbersome as it would be for a security software (you do expect a higher standard from an anti-malware company) to encourage adware-crapware with its installation .. at least it would not be deliberately deceptive.

Additional note: they also use BOLD to foster the illusion/deception that you should leave the (agree/Safesurf) references unchecked .. after all, you are supposed to conclude, this is the acceptance.

Is there a second "agreement" for the software as a whole ? Dunno, others can check that. I know that when I reached the point above the sense was that I was agreeing to CIS.

So Comodo has a team of Design Deceivers to come up with this stuff ... and when it is mildly exposed ...

(Softpedia did not go into the details of the deception .. they simply followed consistent integrity standards .. allowing the download yet pointing out that it is adware. As they do with dozens or hundreds of downloads . Note that even today they have other Comodo products .. BoClean, Backup, Memory Firewall and I_Vault, all without the problem, available for download and listed as 'freeware'.)

    In response...

The Comodo Idiot Team tries bullying .. calling in .... 1,000,000 lawyers. And tries FUD, intimidation and bluster. Even call in the William Clinton Semantic Seminar approach.. "depends upon what adware is". Talk about a dumb company.

    Suggestion:
At this point they should dump the lawyers, apologize clearly and publicly for the 'cease-and-desist' stupidity, and make whatever steps they can make to stop the nonsense.

Comodo's name is simply mud at this time.

(Comodo CEO Melih Abdulhayoglu come on Paltalk on at least one occasion, when he makes any future public appearances, this should be cordially pointed out.)

    Shalom,

    PS.
I am no fan of Softpedia, for reasons discussed elsewhere. However on this one the issue is 100% clear. Softpedia was more than willing to deliver CIS to their users (they are not "Nonags"). Softpedia simply wanted to be sure that the software was represented accurately to their standards, which in this regards are quite sensible, and appreciated. Personally I download usually from Snapfiles or FileForum or MajorGeeks (with reservations about the google-ads with the Major) and Softpedia is not even in my second tier. However they got this one right. (Note: A post above claimed Softpedia switched to calling CIS "spyware" - however this was not documented and my short search found no such listing.)

    PPS.
"1,000,000 lawyers" is a reference to a Tom Paxton song .. one that Mileh should listen to carefully.

I don't know why you are posting this here, but anyway it's not my cup of tea.
Or do you mean that it will be part your next Comodo's toolbaring implementation?
    I can't wait!

    lol, never mind

The main idea behind hopsurf isn't the watching of the internet. it's :

    what is important...

Sorry, but this is marketing hype as far as I am concerned.
Let me see my computer is just sitting here, and zap, I've been attacked by a buffer overflow.

Seems like first something has to get on my system, and then be allowed to run, before it can do a buffer overflow attack. I could go on, but I think the point is made.

First, I read exactly what Hopsurf was before I posted, which made me want it even less. Comodo is a security app, not a "Stumbleupon" (addon for Firefox that does exactly what Hopsurf is proposing). I want it to protect my system from threats, NOT show me cool new websites. Comodo has gone from one bad idea to a worse one, and they need to straighten up.

Off course the threats are real. But my point is for the threat to be exploited somehow something has to run on the machine. Sandboxie is another way to handle websites that can cause problems.

My point is one specific product isn't the only answer to a problem

YOU would do it, but just because you are "informed".

In the setup it's written that you agree installing SafeSurf. The installer tries to convince users that they need that toolbar in order to be 100% safe, so the majority of the user will install it without knowing they're installing Ask.com toolbar and that they'll set ask.com as default search engine (comodo search=ask.com search).

It isn't clear, that's the main problem imho :doubt:

So isn't an antivirus to a virus problem. But it's a good way to start. CMF protects 90% of all BO attacks, you can protect yourself for the rest with a good HIPS.
Every threat has to run on your computer somehow, could you please clarify this o_O

Leolas, for starters, we're still waiting for your reply over here
AFAIK they're planning to change it later
