I have been installing Nod32 v4 on customer sites for a month or so & have had calls from many customers panicking over the Nod32 orange warning regarding Windows security updates. I am finding that it confuses the ordinary user as it produces an unnecessary warning.

Example as I am sitting in front of my laptop right now.
The (XP) laptop boots after not using it for a day or so & the yellow system tray shield displays as it starts downloading updates. Meantime, Nod32 goes orange & pops a warning at me. What is the point of this?

Yep it does.. I've had four or five tickets put in.. I think it is mainly confusion for people if they are not told or explained why.. It's good to educate people in the different color codes..

    Green - Normal

Orange - Windows Updates or version update

Red - ****ed mode call someone

I'm not sure I like it staying orange to remind me of licence renewal when that is a couple of weeks away.

I agree. Perhaps it could turn back green for a while if you acknowledge the alert for renewal and only stay orange once the license has actually expired.

However, regarding the Windows Update alert, I thought it can be turned off. Afterall, Windows Update nags too.

For a home user i think it's a nice feature and don't think it should change to green unless the problem is fixed. So if it turn orange because the license is about to expire or you miss some windows updates it should stay orange until fixed. For corporate usage though i agree that some of this information is necessary for the IT department only (like if the license is about to expire). If the license is about to expire the IT department should be warned, but not all the users. I think you can change the behavior for the windows updates though.

Respectfully, I could not disagree more! An antivirus or an antivirus suite should not be performing Windows/OS functions. Windows already notifies users if they are not up to date on Windows patches. The reminder via Windows IS enough. 2 or more is ridiculous! (But I know that this will never be removed from NOD. It's a "feature" now... :( )

Well actually what i said is that i think it should stay orange until fixed and what nod32 should warn about is another discussion. What i also said is that i think the notification should be hidden for the users in a corporate environment. If it's a good idea to let nod32 warn about missing windows updates i don't know. I'm sure some find it useful while other find it annoying.

I basically don't care since windows update do the same job, but on the other hand it doesn't bother me if nod32 warn me as well. I think a antivirus software is there to protect you and windows fixes is just as important as a updated antivirus software so i guess there is a lot of opinions if this feature should be there or not.

Anyway if nod32 should warn about missing windows update will probably be a endless discussion. Since you can turn off this feature i don't see how this could be a problem at all. Then it's optional so if you don't want to use this feature just turn it off. Those that want to use this feature have the option to let nod32 warn you about missing windows updates. As long as it's optional everyone should be happy, right?

In any case most of users can turn this feature off.
All you need is to go to 'Advanced Options' (F5 button) and find there 'System Updates' option. In smart list box you can choose what type of updates you need to be warned.

The solution should be to educate your users in the practice of windows updates, and add a really good update schedule for auto updates, usually around 7-8pm after work/dinner.

That kind of freaked me out the other night. But I opened up NOD and quickly figured out it was for Windows Updates. Not a bad thing because NOD told me about the updates before my PC had any chance to remind me. In fact it was several hours quicker.

We know this article , Richard , and we know the way to do it . The fact is the end users don't and they call us as resellers asking what is it and how to stop . I have had quite a lot requests about this and as I have said I am bored of explainging about Windows Update , benefits and ESET NOD32's way to disable "the orange notifications" . The majority of my clients have preffered to stop the notifications instead of updaing their OS.

But windows being outdated IS a potential security problem.
And NOD32 being a security software notifies users about missing updates(only critical ones by default).
And it does explain why NOD32 icon turned orange doesn't it?
If you get many questions like that I would suggest writing a short instruction how to disable this warning similar to that on ESET site but in your language.
Notifying about missing critical security updates is important and good feature. Millions of people still think updating software is wasting time or simply don't know about it and malware like Conficker spreads. It would be better if more people would update software they are using and for other people who are already using windows updates it's just a nice feature "just in case".
I don't see a reason why updates should be turned off on most windows systems in the first place.
Pirated windows xp copies to prevent wga? Buy legitimate ones, use better crack(ok, I am NOT advocating piracy here, but those people are already using pirated copies anyway), or turn off notifications in NOD32. From your post it seems some people who are sending you questions have windows updates turned off and do not even know this or that it is important. So maybe it is good their attention is brought to this issue?

TA, for the link, Richard - I turned this off when I upgraded to the current build. I run WU on Patch Tuesday and don't really need NOD telling me to check my updates. As a prior MS MVP, I pick and choose

    Careful with that.

People thinking they're "too good" for a particular update, or that it wouldn't be a good idea to install it because it "breaks <application X>" are the reasons we saw traffic grind to a halt with Code Red and Slammer. Conficker wasn't such an issue because MS practically beats you over the head with updates now.

Woe be to Mac and *n*x users when they begin to see a larger influx of hand-crafted spyware. Most of the Macs I see have never had a single update applied, and loads of the Ubuntu-preloads are just ripe for the exploiting.

Having X Certification or using an alternative OS doesn't make you any less vulnerable to a determined cracker. NOD32 turning orange is a fantastic idea, because that's just one more warning light to tell them that they're at risk.

Too many machines show up with the latest "Antivirus 200X" or whatever to allow the majority of users any peace from badgering about OS, antispyware, and AV updates.
