No I did not.Because I do not use P2P programs. For browsing on internet this firewall is light for me.I am very satisfied with it.

I have a question mark on the system tray icon,is this normal? And is it safe to use the auto learn mode?

    Hi,

At the time I did get the popup I just blocked it to see result. The actual connection for the news was made to "updates.agnitum"(67.15.231.73).

I was having some problems with OP free not accepting rules from the popup. For example, I had the firewall set to ask for all, when I received a popup for the default e-mail client I was given a popup with option to use the default ruleset, which I accepted/allowed, but I was given 5 more popups until the ruleset was actually accepted and put in place. I was given a popup for explorer when I made a search of the PC (as explorer does on XP), I was given 3 popups for explorer and I set to block each time, yet explorer then connected out to MS. When checking the rules in place for explorer it had been set to "Allow all".

I dont know if the problems are in OP free or if OP free simply does not like my setup. I will need to make another setup to check, but currently on this setup the firewall is not really any good if rules from a popup are not going to be correctly added to the ruleset.

Agnitum have not updated the changelog at their main website, and the Free Agnitum Website is very vague to say the least. And I dont like the trail-pay situation that is heavily advertised there.

Users should just download this version directly from CNet Agnitum Outpost Firewall Free 2009, which has a more accurate changelog (except for 64 bit):

This download does not support 64 bit systems. The 64 bit version can be downloaded from Agnitum here. More information as soon as I get it.

I also had problems when trying to remember rules for the firewall, setting it into learning mode did teh trick. Seems that the greyed out Free options cause internal errors. Dis-installed

So at least it was not my setup, it saves me having to set up again to verify. Setting the firewall to "learning" is actually taking away the kind of control that I want from a firewall(packet filter)
Clicking some options does just bring up a "buy the full version" IMHO just an advertising tool, and with the problems I have seen, then not a very good one. If the full version acts the same as this free version, then there is little point my looking at the full version.
I will wait to see if any of these problems I have seen are fixed in a update.

Sincere question... What can Outpost do that COMODO and OA cannot?

Why should I choose Outpost as my firewall over COMODO and OA?

I am talking about the FREE Outpost. Why should I use it over the free OA and free COMODO? What can it do that COMODO and OA cannot?

    Genuine and sincere question.

For me, difficult to answer because I haven't used CIS extensively and OA not at all. CIS might do a better job at host (HIPS) protection but I'd say OP comes very close at least.

    • Because you are more comfortable with it?
    • Because it runs better on your machine?
    • Because you like the vendor's reputation?
    • Because you get better support with it, forum support included?

Sorry to answer your question with questions, but you can only discover the correct answer by trying all of them - thoroughly - before you'll know :)

Yep. I had the same issue and thought I was going crazy at first. But like Kees said, when I put the thing into learning mode it seems to have fixed the problem. But like Stem said, this takes away the control you would need in monitoring outbound/inbound firewall. I like the interface but not the bugs. I will have to uninstall.

I have uninstalled OP and reinstalled ZA Free. I'm back to speed with ZA. :)

The strange thing is with OP turned off my speed is still down, OP must still be filtering when off o_O

When I turn off ZA Free, my speed increases.

I never run more than one fw or real-time a/v on my computers.

    Sincere answer...

The post is about Outpost (Free).

With those types of question you will just close this thread and we all going to lose.

I suggest you to send p.m's to couple of guys that you think are good enough (from reading the post's) to answer your questions.

Just out of curiosity and interest... how did you come to a conclusion that OP comes "very close" to COMODO when you just admitted you have never used or tested COMODO?

Do you know if this version has an auto-update feature?

    I have some questions.
I see the free one does not have Atack Detection Component settings and i wonder, are the main type of atacks still blocked but not logged?
For example ARP spoofing is it hiddenly enabled or .....
Has anyone tested the firewall to see if this atack blocking (Agnitum has a list with them on their website) is or not implemented even if unaccesfull?
I mean are there any atacks types that are still blocked but without user beeing able to turn them off (like you can in Pro version)?
Or they are simply removed and this firewall is better to use by people with personal routers ahead?
Also it seems this Outpost free is the canibalized version of the suite not of the Outpost Pro Firewall (in the main page is written Realtime Antimalware Disabled not antispyware like in PRO).Am i right?

Would still be interested to get some feedback from other users as I really like this firewall a lot. Apart from my individual problem with the network connection (that I'm sure I can find a work-around for) the only other issue I had was with the logs. I know these are filed as text but this is not a good way to access this information. With my installation I could only get just a few "blocked" log entries to appear in the GUI events monitor for NetBIOS and incomplete packets, nothing else and nothing for "allowed" connections. Also, no matter how I configured existing or new rules for "report" the only popups displayed were for outbound svchost DNS connections. I know that the commercial version has more reporting options, but as I read the help file, even with the free program much more than this should be showing in the GUI log and report boxes. Just in case I'm missing something blindingly obvious here can anyone offer an explanation?

Everything else like the prompts for new connections and system events was working perfectly. I had set my configuration to manual by removing the option to create any rules automatically, not that this should have made any difference to the reporting and log events. If anyone has this installed and showing the normal amount of logged traffic you would expect, including "allowed" connections then I'll be pleased to know how you have it configured.

I dont experience that. I replaced NOD32-LNS with NORTON-OUTPOST and, if my computer start a little bit slower (less than 5 seconds), it run slightly faster both in navigator and in email client.

I am impressed by the changement of Norton AV in terms of rapidity and lightness.
