Got to make this free one have the ondemand scanner AV/SP protection. Doesn't have to be fancy graphics. Use less graphics like gray, no 3D stuff either. Everyone has free OD PC Tools AV, AVG AV, AVAST AV, Comodo AV, Rising AV, Avira AV. Drop continuous ads nags not needed but found in AVG AV, Avira AV and Rising AV freeware..

The BETA will start in late summer like it usually does, but I can't give you a fixed day.

Does the free version update better than the paid version? IMHPO'DO, BD is really losing face in many aspects of its operations -- or, should I say, the lack of operation? Hopefully, BD in the process of correcting these problems (in order to present us with a NEW set of problems).

What do you mean by better updating? BD Free only updates definitions and scan engine.

I think you are referring to the fact that the commercial BitDefender is stopping the shield for updates and sometimes it won't come up again until a full restart.

If this is the case you can say that because the free edition doesn't have a shield. Also the devs are working and patching up daily "the shield" to ensure the proper compatibility with all PC/Laptops and other security software.

    Installed it yesterday.
I did a complete computer scan after install.
The scan seemed very slow, but there's no "time elapsed" indicator and the scan log doesn't say how long it took.

Nope... it's still using 3 services: 1 for automatic updates (which, if you disable them, the service KEEPS running!), 1 for "Virus Shield", even though it has no real time scanning! OMG  I guess its for the USB / CD-ROM prompting when you insert them... but guess what, the service keeps running even if you disable that functionality! And the other service, which is in manual state, I think it's for the scanning engine; when you are actually scanning something.

@EsoxLucius: Can you please comment on why this inefficient use of resources? Why the services keep running when I disable their functionality? I could live with the manual one, that would start when scanning but.. the other two? They should at least disable when I chose NOT to auto update and NOT to prompt on USB drives insertion! I think the AV is pretty good, but sadly these things are making me consider dumping it for another on demand with ZERO overhead. I guess the only one that meets that is the ClamWin.

    Thanks.

I wonder how many services the paid version, which offers real time protection, runs... Creepy...

    Yes... pretty creepy!

It's acceptable (at least) or reasonable if the AV wants to use all these services for each of its modules. But for God's sake, disable them if the user disables Automatic Updates and External Device Scanning! And you just CAN'T go an disable it yourself from the services console, because they are protected and don't accept any events.

Please enlighten us on this issue EsoxLucius!

Wow... now I went to try the USB inserting detection and it doesn't work?

I have it enabled on the Antivirus "Device Detection" feature, but I never get the prompt when I insert a USB device!

Can someone please confirm me if this is working for you?

Well... BD is going to sleep with the fishes from my computer! The device detection doesn't work, has 3 useless services installed and many bugs OMG! Besides the randomly crashing and the "Send information to BitDefender" window appearing, another thing I experienced is this:

When I first installed it, the top bar was red because it said that I had 1 issue remaining (a full scan). "OK" I said... Then I went to see what settings to tweak, and when I clicked OK in the settings, the bar came to GREEN, as if I've already scanned! Then, yesterday, it came to RED again, saying I never made a full scan. If this apps behaves so erratically, and can't even realize if I have or haven't made a full scan... how do they expect the users to put their trust in it? Most of them wouldn't even noticed or care, but for people that are into computers... it's a disaster that it works this way!

I actually don't care about it, since I was looking for an on demand scanner only, so real time protection or statuses screen don't matter to me.

Guess I'm going the way of the ClamWin... might not be the best out there but I think its the only AV that has right-click scanning handling and doesn't run any service or resident process.

Clamwin AV does because it automatically updates itself, but you can disable that and stop it from running at start-up.

Yes... you are right; by default you get the ClamTray process that autoupdates the virus definitions. But what I meant is that I'll disable it to have ZERO overhead on the computer.

I'll update via a shortcut to ClamWin.exe with the --mode=update parameter!

Damn! I think ClamAV isn't that good detecting viruses... :S

I submitted a sample to them three days ago and they still haven't updated the signatures to include it! And the file is detected as a Virus in VirusTotal by 25 out of 40 AVs.

Man... what should I do? I don't trust it anymore... but I don't want to have ANY SERVICES running for an on demand AV (ZERO OVERHEAD).

What do you recommend me? Please, let me now.
