This morning I tried to figure out if BitDefender GameSafe is using the latest (2009) engine. Since the downloader was very slow, I browsed a while at http://download.bitdefender.com/ to search for a direct link, and then ran into this guy unexpectedly.

    Code:
    http://download.bitdefender.com/windows/desktop/free/final/en/bitdefender_free_2009_32b.exe
Its size is 10 MB bigger than the previous one. And they even made a 64-bit version:

    Code:
    http://download.bitdefender.com/windows/desktop/free/final/en/x64/bitdefender_free_2009_64b.exe
Does that mean the next version (2010) is coming?

One thing for sure, the next FREE version will be 2011's. :D

Does this version protect in real-time? Otherwise it's pretty retarded of them to write "Protected" on the status:es...

ifs its like the older version it has no realtime protect so they really should get rid of the protected status lol.

Well would you look at that! Now that's what I call a buried treasure ;) . I do agree that -- assuming it doesn't contain realtime protection -- the status should be changed. Still though, BitDefender is a decent antivirus, and serves well as an on-demand scanner.

And did you ever find out if GameSafe uses the latest engine?

    Yes... after Upgrade.

But it's the first screen after installation and reboot, so they don't really hide the deficit of their Free version.

    Cheers

No it does not. Still 2008 version. I shoud have guessed that from the very beginning, since it's $10 cheaper than the current 2009 version.

If BD updated their free edition, it probably means 2010 version is around the corner. They usually have the free version with an older engine.

BitDefender Free Edition never offered an on-access scanner and this version is no different either. Still, it has the same updated definitions, an on-demand scanner and a contextual scanner.

The protected status comes as a derivation from the full version of BitDefender and in this case it's referring to the fact that all definitions are up-to date and and further more the fact that you have ran a full scan on your system.

Take that status as a reminder to scan your computer from time to time. :)

Also for the moment GameSafe edition runs only on BitDefender 2008.

It's actually a pretty good AV. I would use it as a second scanner but I don't like the fact they have 4 services running. The interface is much improved in this version also. Maybe someday Bitdefender will offer a free realtime AV?

That's a great idea, I would give it a try ;) But why should I use a BD version without realtime protection if I can have AVG/Avast/Avira for free :D

You can use it as a second opinion and an on-demand scanner. There are lots of people here that are using it, either as a back-up or as the only AV installed on some machines that don't require that much attention.

Protected by: BitDefender Antivirus and Firefox 3.0.3

You should update to Firefox 3.0.9 ;)

What do you mean with that? Does it now run with less services?
