Using ONLINE BACKUP service???

Hey!

I'm thinking about to start use a Online Backup service,
instead of buying an external HD or NAS.

Any thoughts/recommendations on Online Backup services are welcome?!

How reliable would it be , I am not sure about the data privacy.

 

Well as far as I know is that the data is encrypted on the way to the backup servers, and also keeps being encryped while being stored on the servers.

I have used both IDrive and Mozy. Both work well and seem secure as your data is encrypted before being transmitted and only you have the key.

 

I too am using IDrive and am very happy with it. I have been using it for a few months and have had a number of occasions to retrieve data and have had no problems. That is I find it reliable. I especially like the continuous monitoring function. Any monitored file (under 50 mg) will be checked by the program every 10 min and if it has changed in that time the file will automatically be uploaded to the server. I also like the fact (and have used it) that up to 30 versions of the file are kept on the server and any one of the versions can easily be retrieved as needed. Its easy to use and set up, and is pretty well maintenance free.

I do not feel that this service would replace an external HD though. Upload speeds are normal (that is slow) so to upload a large data set will take a very long time. I have an external drive that I image my drive to regularly and use IDrive to protect my critical files on a continuous basis. This way if there is a fire, theft, or HD meltdown my critical files are safe on IDrives servers.

In short an online backup service is not a total solution but I feel it is an essential part of a complete solution. Give the 2 gig free account a try and see for yourself how effective the service is. I highly recommend it.

I have never seen so much storage for free! If I read their poduct comparison page correctly, data security is minimal with the basic (free) plan.

 

You might also check out Jungle Disk. Good features and secure but upload speeds were slow particularly if you were uploading lots of small files. I tried this about a year ago so that may be resolved now. Worth checking out.

 

Yes thats true, but I encrypt my backup and then upload it. So its ok for me. For personal use its great, especially the price tag

 

Backblaze is a great choice. One thing you have to worry about with all these free storage providers is their sustainability over the long haul. Many of these services have come and gone. Backblaze is well capitalized and the $5 a month is definitely worth it considering the end-to-end encryption (done right) and the overall ease of use. To me, Backblaze wins by a mile.

But i still want to ask if someone here know of any
"Cross-platform" online backup solutions?

I know that Microsoft got Live Mesh but it isen't quite a "Backup" service,
it's more of switching files between diff computers unfortunately.
