SSM is at the core of my security package on every Windows OS I use. With a ruleset that enforces a default-deny policy, the weakest link in any package (the user) is taken out of the equation. Users can't install, remove, or update software. They can't change any important system settings or make any permanent changes to the registry. I let anyone use this PC without having to be concerned about what they might do or run into.

Regarding Sandboxie, I'm not convinced that it will be able to contain everything that a user might encounter. With malware writers wanting to target the BIOS, firmware, chips, etc, it's entirely possible that we'll see malware that can't be removed by the user. Given the nature of the present malware, the difficulty of detecting/removing it, and the course it's taking, IMO the price of failure is too high to rely solely on containment software. I am trying Sandboxie on one Win2K test system, but not as the primary defense. I'm testing its ability to isolate the attack surface from the OS components and system software. The OS itself is protected by SSM enforcing the same default-deny policy with one change. The UI of SSM is connected, so I will see prompts if something tries to access non-sandboxed components or if an unknown wants to run.

And again, back to the single best security app, Knowledge. Free for everyone to try. But must be paid for with time.

BTW, the analogy of 'if everyone was a user' is generally good. However, I would not say that many 'wish' to use admin, but because of the limitations of favorite programs, often it is a choise of the experience you enjoy vs. the safe experience with no joy. For myself, that is most definately the case.

Wouldn't be a nice little proggie coming soon in the corner, which could allow us to enjoy the same philosophy taken from the two sides of one mirror? ;)

    Sully you're the man :D

Software Restriction Policy with browser running as Basic User is always my single best/favorite security application. I also have a rather extensive Designated File Types list that I use within SRP (takes me a while just to type them in on a fresh install...:p).

As to some security app that I've downloaded or paid for then it would be either DefenseWall or AppGuard. Both excellent. I really love Shadow Defender as well.

    Later....

NoScript add-on for Firefox. It is a Default Deny system for websites to prevent malware from unknown websites. It's much more efficient than CIS because I don't have to deal with D+ alerts.

If I had to use Vista with its default settings (Windows firewall, UAC, Windows Defender) It would be definitely ShadowProtect Desktop, my second choice Shadow Defender.

My XP machine has been using for the last year only its Windows firewall and ShadowUser Pro (I scan with Avira Personal every month, but never found anything).

    Rollback RX

It literally makes my imaging software and virtualization software obsolete.

Hourly scheduled snapshots that recover 100% of your files = heaven

    Don't really know o_O :D

But it works similar to System Restore.
Except it is more stable and recovers 100% of the files.:thumb:

But one disadvantage is it takes up plenty of disk space

on my 500gb HD i havent notice significant room taken up, i typically have 7-15 snapshots available at a time, then it auto deletes ones that are older than my set date since creation unless i choose to lock the snapshot of course.

rollback rx system restore will save your precious time, when you got software problem.

Also after i browse the dark side of internet, i always restore my previous clean snapshot....that's how i trust rollbackrx8.1 even though i know i'm protected by KIS & prevx. ;)

re: imaging software of rollback, i never use it yet.

Definetly, ive used Rollback Rx many time to restore to a clean image after getting any sort of infecton or software malfunction etc. because it loads before the OS, so it can save ur bacon much better than Windows built in System Restore. :thumb:
