Well you will probably receive more advanced help if u post in their forum, but just to make sure that are not other problems i have to ask?
Do you use the default settings in web guard?
Is the browsing speed faster if u disable the web guard? You can uninstall the web guard and reinstall it some other time to check again.
    What browser,os do you use?
Are there some particular websites that you experience slowdown or all of them?
Do you have other security programs alongside Avira(you are using the premium or the suite)?

No problem for me with browsing with Avira 9. I did experience slow browsing after installing SuperAntispyware with AVira 9 even though it was not the pro version and had no real-time scanning. Uninstalling SuperAntispyware fixed the problem. Weird.

There will always be *some* kind of hit with a web scanner, but Avira's is one of the best in that regard, taking very little toll on speed. Possibly a conflict with something else? Or maybe the first time you've used an AV with a web scanner, so you notice a slight difference?

Go to : Configuration > WebGuard > Action for concerning files
Select mode as Interactive and tick the option "Display Progress Bar".

Now whenever, WebGuard is downloading/scanning any content you will see a semi-transparent window at the lower-right corner. It will show the % of the file that has been downloaded. Once download reaches 100%, it will be scanned almost instantly by Avira and then sent to browser. Till that time the object will not be shown.

For ex: If you go to a flash intensive site, Avira WebGuard will download and scan every swf file. Till then the browser will show nothing. But that doesn't mean avira is slowing you down, its just that the files are being downloaded in background.

    Hope that helped.:thumb:

You don't need to run the webguard at all. Common misconception. I have never seen any evidence that it improves protection. The guard will catch anything that executes. I never use webguard and have found it does slow their browsing down- some very little and some a lot.

I always wondered about this. I have online armor paid and not really a fan of webscanners so was thinking of uninstalling the Avira webgaurd. I wonder how much protection I am really out of by doing this. So many opinions on this matter.

I have seen instances where the WebGuard caught something before the website even loaded. So, it clearly does work. There's a performance hit, however, but, like you've said, it varies from person to person.

I agree. Although I should also mention that I browse the internet always virtualized. I have uninstalled webguard through the Avira folder/ setup. My browsing speed was definitely affected.

People will argue both ways on that one, and there are valid points on each side of the argument. Check out older threads where the subject was pretty much beat to death. I personally don't like them and prefer to do without.

I have just compared the speed of Avira 9on XPx64 with my Ubuntux64 installation on the same PC, there is absolutely no impact on speed. Of course, I don't use anything but Avira, no other security layer except for LUA and DEP. I even have enabled the suspicious i-frames scanning, I must say, Avira has done a swell job.

I notice a slowdown in speed with WebGuard. It was on a new computer with a fresh Wildows, so there were no conflicts. It's worse when entering threads on websites.

Actually, web scanners do not really slow down the surfing speed but change the display behaviour of the browser. Without a web scanner, the modern browers start to display a webpage already when it is only partially loaded. For example, if you have a large complex web page with lots of sub elements, pictures, frames and so on, the browser will start to display things very early on.
Now, when you enable a web scanner, the page must be downloaded by the web scanner *completely* before forwarding it to the browser. That is necessary to ensure the entire content is scanned for malware and safe. So the browser will not start to display the page like before but rather the complete page will "pop in" suddenly but with a "delay". But the delay is the same amount of time the browser would need to *complete* the loading the page anyway.

If you are using a web proxy like AdMuncher, Proxomitron or similar advertisement blockers, you are already used to this kind of surfing and won't notice a difference when enabling a web guard aswell.

Unfortunately, that has not been my experience. The web scanners of Eset and Avast load the page right away on my computer. I have seen a little of what you say about the partial vs. full loading, but I have timed it and there's still a difference with Avira's WebGuard.

If Avast and Eset are loading the pages right away, looks like neither of them are doing their job I guess.

Hmm, now I am going to disagree with that one. I did a test last night and uninstalled the Web Protection module with Avira and it is remarkable fast, I didnt say remarkable faster, just remarkable fast. So there is a difference.

I am starting to agree with Osaban with the perception of, why worry, the guard will catch it. Not a bad assumption.

It could also depend on PC to PC, on my dual quad core or the quad core Phenom, I don't notice any slowdowns, maybe I will later test it on an older dual core AMD 4000 PC and see if it has any impact. As I said, I tested it against a Linux install on the same PC and there was no impact at all. I am however basing all these tests on Opera and not any other browser.

I don't know for Avast but ESET isn't. From my experience (using both AV's on two identical machines) Avira's web module have less impact on browsing speed.

    @mvdu
In ESET EAV active mode for browsers is disabled by default...so turn it on, surf day or two and post again what you think;)
