Serious stuff TuneXP

There are lot of system tweak/tune utilities on the market today,some packed in a suite or standalone,some paid or free,one of the best IMO is TuneXP,a good oldie,and it is remarkable what can be done with it,it really speed up everything,there is a guide that explain why and what can be tweaked,very helpfull.
So guys give it a spin and like hear what you think.

Installed it. Tried to use it but the Help documentation that one is advised to consult carefully before using any of the tweaks was not working. Does anybody know if this is available separately for reference?

 

I installed it a few weeks ago and the documentation (if we're talking about the same stuff) was right in the help tab.

If you haven't tried WINDOWS 7 beta and want a nice sneak peek at it's screenface GUI and new taskbar, you gotta check out this THEME for both Vista & XP.

If i didn't know any better, the way the taskbar icons are grouped together, i would say this is exactly what they should have done in re-writing Windows 98/Me instead of abandoning it because it looks so Win 98 in my opinion with the exception of the really cool taskbar tabs with GLOW EFFECTS!

Decided to take a look at the program tonight and thought to myself,,,,,this looks very interesting. While browsing around the program I noticed the boot speed increase title and clicked on it. To my surprise the program immediately began optimising the boot files. OK I thought, lets see what it does. All was going fine until the function was finished doing its thing and then, without any instruction from me it started to defrag the drive. Well, I have RollBack installed and you are not supposed to defrag using 3rd party defrag utilities when RB is installed on the PC. I used RB to restore to a point in time before I installed Tweak. Turned Returnil on and reinstalled the tweak program. There must be a way to tell the program what you do and do not want it to do I thought to myself. Well,,,,if there is a way to prevent the defrag I could not find it. Now perhaps the defrag is an integral part of the tweak to the boot but .......

I will put this program aside for a bit until I get around to uninstalling RB so I can image the PC. Then I will give it a try again without RB installed.

Sounds like a fine program but I would really like to determine what it will and will not do, in addition the users guide could stand some work IMO.

 

Didn't mean to seem to insert a OT in this thread but thought it might be of interest for someone reading it.

As far as TuneUp Utilities i used to use it for a time and practicd making bootskins with it untill i found out it actually hacked my kernel and changed it's name. That was too unruly and chancy for me to swallow so i steered away from it finally for good.

 

Automatically doing a defrag tweakroutine ? That is not supposed to do that,
It depend totally on user action,you decide what to tweak and it is advised in the helpfile to do a reboot after a tweak,so i guess it should be user related why this weird behavior occur.

O yes,your right it defrag only the bootfiles and places them in the correct order.not a total defrag !

Not quite the same thing, but TweakUI, part of Microsoft's PowerToys, lets you customise elements of Windows XP.

Ultimate Windows Tweaker seems pretty simple to use and its free.

 

Since you want to be a hard head about it i suggest you re-read why i posted it in the first place because TuneUp Utilities does have implications to customizing system files.

BTW look for input in the thread about TuneUp Utilities,if this is true about what you said Hmmmm........

 

If i stand corrected this is no longer the case i will be the first to admit error. But here is but one source i refer to for TuneUp Utilities version 2008. Perhaps 2009 is eliminated this tweak?

Are we not getting confused here between TuneXP (from DriverHeaven), the start for this thread, and TuneUp Utilities (from TuneUp)?

Or am I just old, crusty and losing my mind? Personally, if I am not, then I would like to revert back to experiences, pros & cons, etc., with using TuneXP...please!

AH, so would that affect RollBack snaps? I really would not want to have a problem down the road.

 

I do not see why it should as it is not a total defrag however if you rolled back to a previous snapshot I suspect that you would loose the effect of using that tweak.

Perhaps it is one to do at the same time as a more general defrag when one might first uninstall Rollback Rx...but then again there is a way of defraging with RB Rx installed (in amother thread).

I may well try it to see what effect it has on the whole process (probably just after I do my next full image )

Well, since I got a slap on the wrist from Coldmoon for talking about defragging with Returnil protection on (actually, I thought exlcuding the disk cache from defrag was good enough although I didn't say it in the thread), I would caution you against even a partial or boot file defrag with Returnil protection on. Then again, this boot time defrag is something Windows will do on its own periodically, so perhaps it's an exception to that rule?

Anyways, no, I will not try to turn this into a Returnil thread!

As and when I try the boot defrag option of TuneXP I will make sure that no snapshots can be taken during the process...and then follow that with a complete disk defrag following the approach that the experts on RB Rx have suggested...with a full image in my back pocket just in case.
