BOClean going to be discontinued

I expected this to happen eventually. And although I stopped using it a while ago I can't say Im surprised.

 

A shame Have been using it since 2002. When the time comes, I'll re-evaluate my entire diy suite, though I'd rather not.

 

Not surprised stop using it when I got vista, over a year ago now.

 

Is there any word on when this will happen?

Well, it makes sense. They'll discontinue old BOClean because new version implemented in CIS will be using new memory scanner and will also be able to use not only existing BOClean signatures but also those from CIS.
Updating old tech just doesn't make sense anymore at that point.

 

If this is true, it's the sadest part and also tells much about how much one can trust some "security vendors":

I wonder, when Kevin went to Comodo some years ago, did he know that it could mean BOClean's end? Because i kind of remember him saying that "this will only make it grow further, Melih is a great guy that supports the product" and stuff like this.

 

Well, i found the answer to my last question. It seems this isn't a surprise (well, it won't be standalone as "always" from now on, but, it will be in the AV):

Although if the user that claims that Kevin knew about it from him (a forum member) is right, it is a very bad taste from Melih's side.

 

I returned to the forums to see what is new in the anti trojan/malware sections, and I am saddened to read the news of BOClean's discontinuation. I was a user before and after it changed hands to Comodo, and always recommended/installed it on the computers of friends and family.

Like RejZoR said... it certainly makes sense that BOClean be phased out, as it will now be integrated with CAV. But the dilemma obviously arises for those of us who have chosen not to use CAV/CIS.
Speaking for myself, with where CAV/CIS stand at this time... BOClean alone is probably not enough to convince me to use CAV/CIS. And it is definitely not enough for me to freely recommend/install for others as a package. But having benefitted from BOClean being free for so long (under Comodo), it also wouldnt be fair that I tell them how they should run things either

Sadly my decision comes down to using a product of Comodo that they have no real monetary incentive in continuing to offer for free or not using any Comodo products at all.

But who knows... if Kevin is still actively involved he may have something up his sleeve that will hook me in... he was always good at that kind of stuff

 

I'm sure many others will share your opinion,it was my understanding that there would continue to be standalone versions of the individual components of CIS.

 

So what is everyone going to use instead of Boclean,when it does get discontinued?

A direct replacement might be Threatexpert if it develops into a real-time memory scanner.

 

I doubt that given Melih's many public proclaimations about a secure web being free,etc.

Why emblazon the website with 'free for life' then retract that? It'd blow their credibility apart.

The strange thing is BOClean is the only Comodo product out there that
has a proven sales record.

(let me change that,the only part of their free line that has a proven sales record)

 

Threatexpert won't evolve to real-time scanner, nor will anyone see any further development.
For what I know, PCTools has implemented it into their antivirus, unfortunately. I say unfortunately, not because it was implemented in their antivirus, which is great for their users, rather because there won't be any development for it, as a stand alone tool.

I might be wrong, but, I think I've seen that info in some thread in their forum, sometime ago.

I said goodbye when BOClean and PSC were sold to Comodo.

 

TBH, not really dissapointed by this, never found BOClean to be very useful and it only makes sense to be integrated into their AV, im pretty sure any AV out 2day does basically what BOClean can do.

 

Well it's still in beta at present so who knows,I think I read in the FAQs something about not having a real time scanner 'yet',but I couldn't swear to it..Even if there's no real-time standalone tool though,the technology will be in Browser defender,assuming of course that remains free.

 

I am Rednose from the the Comodo forums, and that is what happened. I asked Melih specificly if Kevin knew about it on February 10, and I never got an answer. So on February 17 I made the announcement on Comodo forums and emailed Kevin. I got an answer from Kevin on February 18 with excuses for the wait, because he had to contact Melih first to find out himself ! Although my contact with Melih was always very good, I realy blame him for that !
