Oleg, as I mentioned in my post, I did run memtest overnight for something like twenty passes. No errors! Further thoughts?

Check this: This morning, I ran TI and it stopped with an error message saying something to the effect that it couldn't read some segment, or other. I clicked on "Ignore All" (?) and it went on to make a full backup after which it announced that "The Operation Has Been Successfully Completed". I then ran a validation routine and it came back with the same, or similar, message. When I open the archive, everything seems to be there. However, having received the errors, I'm concerned whether the backup is, indeed, good and will, in fact, restore my system in the event of an emergency. Do I have anything to worry about in this kind of "error" situation?

OK I took the 2 memory modules out and reseated them, Memtest ran 3 passes OK in about 90 minutes.
I then tried ATI9709 from the rescue CD and it worked for both the internal and external drive.

Thanks for the advice and sincere apologies for hijacking this thread!

I wouldn't trust any backup that I had to click on Ignore anything to get rid of an error message. It might be helpful if you could post the actual message.

If you haven't, try running chkdsk X: /r on all your partitions. Substitute the drive letter of the partition being tested for X, a reboot will be requested for C. TI is fairly tolerant of file system issues but they can cause a problem.

TI shouldn't be run on systems that are overclocked or running with aggressive memory timings. If your system is being pushed, backoff to the default values.

Try running TI from the rescue CD instead of Windows if you were running in Windows. Not usually a problem but there have been cases where an app caused a problem. If you were doing it with the CD, try it in Windows.

On a longer shot since you ran Memtest86+, if you have multiple sticks of memory and your machine will run on fewer, try running without some of the memory installed and if it works, swap out the other memory. Memory diagnostics are generally good but they are not real life, eg, when Memtest is running the disk system is not being flogged like it is with TI running.

    Hello sidthekid,

Thank you for using Acronis True Image

I agree with seekforever, please reproduce the issue and let us know the exact error message.

Perform check disk of the hard drive mentioned in the error message.

If this doesn't help, please download Acronis Report utility available here and run it, create a report.

This would provide us with detailed information on the hard disk partition structure.

    Thank you.
