Well just in honor of the occasion, I figured I'd ask....what's with the llamas and the board or board software? Some posters have a tag saying they're a llama, others say they aren't. I've wondered, but didn't see a specific FAQ relating to llamas (or even alpacas). ;)

As for the 10,000 member mark, wow. Thank goodness we're all not on the board and posting at once, too. ;)

    Cheers to all! :D

Finally, a good question. :D I've wondered about the llamas myself.

Actually for some bizarre reason, that's the default that YaBB (at least here) sets up in everyone's profile when we first register. So if you don't modify your profile, you're stuck with "I'm a llama".

Personally, if I wanted to stick close to the original default, I'd have chosen Ogden Nash's "4-l-lama" (try that aloud, and think of fires). :D

Yes, you are correct Mike. That phrase is the default value (hardcoded into the board software) for the "Personal Text" field in the member profile record. Technically, that field is meant to be the caption for a member's avatar, if they have one.

There are many meanings assumed to be associated with the phrase "I'm a llama!" and some are negative in nature, however we prefer to take the meaning "Hi, I'm new here!" out of all the possible meanings.

It must be stated that we are not the authors of this forum software. YaBB SE is provided free of charge from http://www.yabbse.org/ and it has been very good to us for the year and a half we've been running it. (Yes, this forum is two years old, however for the first 6 months or so we used "YaBB 1 Gold", which had a different default text value "I love YaBB 1G - SP1!" You'll see some old time members still with that personal text in their profiles.)

A little more information on this is available here:

Ah, that explains it. Thanks for the info.

Although the Llama Anti-Defamation League might want to look into this if the term is used in a derogatory manner. Llamas are not lamers!! (Sounds like a bumper sticker.) :D

The YaBB folks don't want Ralph the Wonder Llama on their case. (For any Monty Python fans who might see this.) ;) :D

[move]Again, another mystery solved!! Congrats to Wilders...from llamas to lamers, we've got it covered! :D (...these scrolly things are rather irritating but thought I'd try it out anyway. ) :D [/move]

Aha! (And thanks as usual for the background info, LWM, before I forget.) My ISP (Golden Triangle) has a NetScams forum which uses "I love YaBB" as its default -- considering they're otherwise top-notch, including top-of-the-line versions of VirusGuard and Spamguard, I'll have to rib them a little about their "obsolete" YaBB. :D :D

Actually, YaBB 1 Gold is not necessarily obsolete. It would depend entirely upon whether they are running an outdated version of it or not. YaBB (Yet another Bulletin Board) 1 Gold is a forum software written in PERL with data (users, posts and threads) stored in files. YaBB SE ("Splinter Edition") is simply a PHP/MySQL port of that same software. PHP provides some advantages over PERL, as MySQL does over flat files.

Each YaBB product still has it's uses depending upon server, software supported and size of forum.

Thanks again -- we managed to wander a little O/T (what was the topic, anyway? Oh, yes, there's the title. ;) ), but it was an interesting side-trip.

I just snuck a quick look, and they're using Gold SP 1.1. Slightly slower traffic than here, one fresh posting or reply every couple of weeks is typical.

Congratulations to all of you. Paul, staff and ofcourse all the people visiting here. Its amazing there is a forum with those lots of people and still all are on topic, but never forget a bit of humor we all need.
I hope you understand what i mean because English is no my native.
Go on all members and visitors with your questions and ofcourse solutions.
In the past few weeks, unfortunatly having a lot time recovering from surgery, i have learned so much about safe computing.

Have fun everybody and take care,

    Gerard
